Ultrium 215i problem

Hello!

When I tried to write to tape Ultirium drive stopped working and flashed in pairs with
Ready & Drive Error
Tape Error & Use cleaning cartridge.

What does it mean?

I have this problem about one time per month :-(
Another 215i drive I have has no such problem.
Do I have to send this drive for repair?

Depending on how much the drive is used is to the frequency of how many times is will require cleaning.
In saying that, if the drive is under maintenance get it replaced under your contract if it is not performing as it should. If the drive is not used extensively, yes get it repaired. If the same tape(s) are used day-in day-out, then this could the drive some distress.

The upper/lower LED pairs flashing alternately means that the drive is going into an internal diagnostic routine called "Diag-Lite". It can indicate that the drive is having some serious problems performing its duties. If this happens as you say, once a month, check for a bad tape in your backup pool that emerges to be used once a month. Otherwise, if you cannot determine such a reason, the drive may need exchanging...

Also note that some causes of "Diag-Lite" mode have been resolved in newer firmware releases. The 215 Ultirum drive is currently on revision E23D (released March 2002).

I changed firmware to latest.
Now drive fails more frequently!
I called service center and they promised me thay they will replace it...
