continual periodic tape querying

Is there something can I do (aside from removing the tape) to stop the continual periodic tape querying of an external SCSI DAT24 (SureStore) connected to a W2K-Pro computer, but allow necessary boot time querying?

I start my computer with the tape drive on and a tape loaded.
I periodically hear some tape activity when I am not using the drive.

I don't mind a 1 time query during/after booting to asses the status of the drive and the tape.

I don't know if this is a drive setting or windows/os setting.

Please advise.
