different tape-capacity of the same tapedrive-model
Hello everybody,
I replaced my built-in DDS3-tape drive C1537A (tape0) by a stand-alone DDS3-tape-drive C1537A (tape1), which I connected with a SCSI-cable. After powering on, the new devices were created automatically.
The following fbackup, 3 GB, invoked by cron (same command, on the SAME DDS3-tape like in the old drive before) stopped after 5 hours (end of tape, enter volume 2 ...) and failed.
Normally this backup took 35 minutes, now it is broken after 5 hours.
Now I have both drives installed, but I only want to use tape1.
My question is: why does backup need more tape-capacity for the same thing? Do I have to create some devices again, manually, do I have to reboot, or what else?
tape 0 10/0/15/0.3.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE HP C1537A
/dev/rmt/0m /dev/rmt/0mn /dev/rmt/c2t3d0BEST
tape 1 10/0/15/0.4.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE HP C1537A
/dev/rmt/1m /dev/rmt/1mn /dev/rmt/c2t4d0BEST
It is a HP9000 with HP-UX 11.0
Thank you for answering,
Michael

Re: different tape-capacity of the same tapedrive-model
What server is this on? Both drives are on the same hardware path 10/0/15/0 and one is scsi id3 the other is id4. Are there any other devices on this same path? Maybe an id conflict? Unplug the external drive and check if any other internal device(s) are using ID4. Check the cable and terminator.

Hello Michael,
I guess there are jumper settings that you may need to check...
I am attaching a file for you to see if the jumpers are set correctly...

Re: different tape-capacity of the same tapedrive-model
Hi,
I got a strange solution.
After trying many things I executed the fbackup by hand (not by crontab). After this all further crontab-backups worked as well. 2 months later: 4 backups failed; same backup manually; works fine.
Have a good New Year, Michael
