fbackup problem with seagate drive

I am having problems with fbackup on a seagate Ultrium drive. I am on an N4000 running HP-UX 11.0. I have patches PHKL_28216 and PHCO_25424 installed (stape and fbackup). I get the message "not a valid device file". I have seen other people with the same problem, but the patches have not fixed my problem. tar does work to the device file just fine. If I use fbackup -f host:/dev/rmt/, it does work, but it is very slow. I have also tried using /dev/rmt/0mb and it doesn't work either. Does any one have any other ideas?

These commands will help. Can you attach the results?

What type of tape drive?

Here's the syntax for fbackup and frecover:

"...fbackup 0y -f /dev/rmt/0m..." (* Full system backup *)

"...fbackup -0y -g /tmp/graph_file -f /dev/rmt/0m..." (* Full backup of file system listed in graph file, see man pages. *)

Is the SCSI bus shared with any other devices ? It will only run as fast as the slowest device.

You doing remote backups? have you edited /.rhosts & /etc/hosts.equiv ?

I don't want to do remote backups (even though it works slowly). I want fbackup to work locally with the command... fbackup -f /dev/rmt/

Tried that, got the exact same error. I believe the problem is the stape driver. stape doesn't know about all the features of this drive, therefore fbackup won't use it.

Got the final work from HP today. This drive is not supported and there is no timeframe for it to be supported. They recommended using some backup program like omniback (i.e. native UNIX commands are not supported)

Unless anyone has any other ideas, I think this case is closed.

We tested seagate LTO drives with omniback and could not get compression to work with the stape driver. I believe the stape driver will only work correctly with HP LTO's. We ended up buying IBM LTO's and loaded there atdd driver onto our hp-ux systems 11i and 11.0. These drives have been outstanding.Been in production with them since Oct2002
