restore failed with the following dmesgs

I have a restore running which failed and following messages were there in the dmesg of my backup server.

Hi,
tape is damage or you have to clean up drive.

I have retried after cleaning the drive but the same messages...

Probably tape is damage but it it was been possible to taste to read them tar command:
# tar -t /dev/rmt/0m
and verify whether something is recorded.

Try HP LTT drive test (drive acceptance).
