Re: use barcode in hp-unix
You can do that using the mc command to insert the required tapes in the required drives. Mc uses the slot number as identification, though.
Do a man mc for details. Example, to move a tape from drive 1 to slot 5, then from slot 2 to the drive, type:
mc -s D1 -d S5 -s S2 -d D1
You can start backups this way by entering a cron job. Crontab -e to edit the cron jobs. man cron and man crontab for information.

Re: use barcode in hp-unix
The library can understand bar codes, but there is no option under hp-ux to manage the bar code. you can use backup application like Omniback or veritas net backup or something like that, that can understand and can use bar codes on the backup tapes.
Hope this helps.

SolutionYou can read the barcodes and move tapes
around with the 'mc' command, but it will
not manage anything for you. You will have
to manually keep track of what backup is
on what tape. You need to purchase either
omniback, veritas or legato to manage your
backup requirements totally.
