on a windows 200 server and using Veritas to run back ups,the last 3 days the back ups have failed. The error message is
Storage device "COMPAQ 2" reported an error on a request to write data to media.

Error reported:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
Backup completed on 05/11/2004 at 03:10:53 .
Backed up 215023 files in 23844 directories.
66 files were in use
Processed 57,788,973,163 bytes in 7 hours, 10 minutes, and 29 seconds.
Throughput rate: 128.0 MB/min
Software compression ratio: 1.4:1
I have run through a cleaning tape and tried a new back up tape still fails.

Re: veritas error message.

Disable the Windows 2000 Removable Storage Service, unless you already did it.

Re: veritas error message.

Jim,

I'd suggest a search at Veritas in their KB. I ran one, but since I don't know your version of Backup Exec (assume that's what you're talking about), picked up way too many results. Their knowledge base search is here, and I'd suggest limiting your search by selecting your version in the Version drop-down list as well as selecting Windows 2000 in the Platform drop-down.

If you are running Backup Exec, the search page is here: http://www.veritas.com/be_support/www?cmd=landing&product_code=10

One item, for each result, there are more specific categories listed under the result, which can also narrow it down for you.

Good luck with it. I hate problems like this, and I'm sure you do too.
