ETSI POC #34: SDN Virtual EPC Gateway to be featured at Open Networking Summit

Author: Ajay Sahai - Dir Technical Marketing, ConteXtream (An HP Company)

ETSI PoC #34

ETSI PoC #34 demonstrates the capabilities of an SDN enabled virtual EPC gateway. ConteXtream’s SDN controller, that leverages OpenDaylight (ODL) and adds capabilities like federation, enables a next generation implementation of 3GPP EPC Gateway elements where the S-GW and P-GW are each split in to separate control and user plane entities. The demonstration will show how ConteXtream’s federated SDN controller and software switch enable not only independent scaling of EPC Gateway control and user plane components, but also create an ability for the user plane elements to be placed at both central and multiple edge locations. Traffic flows can be serviced simultaneously both from central and edge sites. Moving select flows closer to the edge can benefit applications in terms of reduced latency (better QoE), and can also reduce operator bandwidth needs. This makes it possible to move caches much deeper into mobile networks, thereby caching popular videos closer to the radio edge, which will benefit both consumers and operators.

The PoC showcases a multi-vendor solution including NFVI and SDN software, VNFs providing eNB (baseband), MME, EPC and Gi-LAN functions. The h/w components in the PoC include a remote radio head and standard compute, switch platform. Vendors in this PoC are HP, Redhat, Mavenir, Altiostar, IMVision and ConteXtream (an HP Company). Operators sponsoring this PoC are Telenor and Vodafone.
