Futurecom 2014 #1: Bemvindos a Sao Paulo (Welcome to Sao Paulo) for an NFV experience


This is the first of the series of blog entries on HP’s OpenNFV team experience at Sao Paulo’s Futurecom 2014, gathered by Ignacio García-Carrillo, Business Development Manager for NFV in the Americas.


Monday 13th was a day of arrivals and gatherings in Sao Paulo. Meeting old friends, remembering shared experiences and getting the first taste of the hectic pace of Futurecom, in one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, Sao Paulo.


Futurecom is one of the largest Telco & IT events in the world, and certainly the biggest in Latin America. Thus HP has taken the decision to invest in promoting its position in the region through an expanded participation this year, which will see the biggest booth by HP ever and the largest presence from local, regional and worldwide executives from the company. And after the much applauded decision by Futurecom to include NFV as one of its core themes, the HP OpenNFV Business Unit is proud to be part of the extended effort by HP at this event, and get NFV to be the central issue of HP’s booth for Futurecom 2014.


To start off on the right foot today, we had Werner Schaefer, our VP of the NFV business unit, have lunch together with the Brazilian press. Hosted by the Brazilian HP marketing and HP Networking teams (kudos to both), Werner and team had the chance to reach for some of the most prestigious specialized media in Brazil and Latin America, extend the NFV message in the region and explain what HP can offer to the industry. We reviewed why HP is leading the way and discussed how HP Brazil is embracing this strategic transformation of the industry. In a relaxed but vibrant discussion, we reviewed the Telco market situation in Brazil and the rest of Latin America, the approach to NFV of the major Communication Service Providers in the region, and different aspects of HP’s OpenNFV program. In detail, we examined the investment, resources and partner and lab programs for a really open environment, which we believe is the right way to approach this kind of transformation. Key messages went through to our most pleasant press colleagues: HP is here to stay with a massive investment, NFV is for real, and we are going with the best partner ecosystem. As a dessert, along with some local pastries, we advanced some key NFV announcements being done by HP this week, under a non-disclosure agreement until release later this week, as we will see in future entries. This made the delight of the local press as we greeted good bye.


After this nice engagement we continued the day with preparations for Futurecom with our HP Brazil colleagues. We met part of the extended NFV team. Either local, regional or worldwide leaders coming to the Futurecom event. We reviewed different customer and partner situations that may be discussed these days, did a final check that everything is in place and ready for the event and made final preparations for tomorrow during the evening.
