HP Discover 2014: HP NFV CTO Prodip Sen Addresses why SDN matters to NFV

At HP Discover 2014, Network Functions Virtualization was an important topic for our CSP guests. The all new NFV track offered eight sessions, four demos, four breakouts, and 13 OpenNFV partners. Among these sessions was a discussion on why SDN matters to NFV. HP NFV CTO, Prodip Sen, sat down in an interview to discuss how SDN can be used in the NFV journey as a complimentary technology to grease the wheels and ensure a smooth journey. Key highlights include:

  • Over the last few years, CSPs have been exploring NFV technology and now they are moving into a phase where they want to start deployment. They are moving into an operational phase, asking the main question: what do I need to do to make this work in my network?
  • NFV is about bringing IT and the network together. HP has DNA in both of these places and understands enough about both worlds to help customers bridge this gap.
  • ETSI NFV ISG is now starting to look at operational questions. The previous phase was not looking at these.
  • Open source created a new open platform for NFV (OPNFV).
  • Part of the NFV journey involves automating the network.
  • OpenStack is a major cloud orchestration component – but other existing open source projects are needed, such as Open Daylight, Linux, and many more.
  • OpenStack was developed for the enterprise market; it is not yet geared for network operators. That’s the main challenge.
