HP OpenNFV - A perspective since last year's launch

It's hard to believe it's been a year since we announced the HP OpenNFV Program at Mobile World Congress. Last year, the market was full of buzz in anticipation of what NFV might mean as we walked the halls of the FIRA. This year – we’re seeing outcomes of vision, planning and plain hard work across the industry. From HP perspective, it is gratifying to come back to Barcelona and share what we have accomplished with our partners in the last 12 months (see our HP OpenNFV traction timeline) – and top it off with yesterday’s announcement with Telefonica.

Last year, we announced a focus on 4 key areas with our OpenNFV program. Let's take a look at it, and see how we've progressed on our promise of an Open approach to NFV:

  • Open partner ecosystem: With the HP OpenNFV Partner Program, we've signed 9 technology partners, announced partnerships with Nokia and Wind River, and we have 140 ISVs in motion to test their solutions in our OpenNFV Labs. This approach is key to our philosophy and belief that no one vendor can do it all. In fact, our recent survey of CSPs, 67% of respondents see opening the network up to innovation from larger supplier group as a key driver for NFV. This open, multi-vendor approach to NFV is one of the key reasons Telefonica selected us for their UNICA project.

  • Open reference architecture: With the HP OpenNFV Reference Architecture, we're providing the flexibility and choice that CSPs demand. In the same survey, 77% of CSPs consider solution openness as a critical factor in the vendor selection process. And based on our open architecture, we announced a partnership with Wind River to create carrier grade HP Helion OpenStack solutions for NFV.

  • Standards leadership: We believe that our active involvement and contributions to standards organizations helps speed alignment and enables openness. HP employees are chair of OPNFV, and vice-chair of ETSI ISG, and we are the leading contributor to OpenStack.

  • Labs and PoCs: Our five OpenNFV Labs enable testing in a multi-vendor environment to lower risk and speed access to applications. They are open and operational in Houston, TX, Ft. Collins, CO, Grenoble, France, Tel Aviv, Israel, and Seoul, South Korea. In addition, to help lower risk, we're involved in 23 plus proof of concept projects around the world. According to the same survey I mentioned earlier, 60% of CSPs cite lowering risk of new services as a key business driver for NFV adoption.

So last year, we highlighted the ETSI PoCs in our booth, this year we had a booth full of joint demos with year? What do you think we'll all be talking about? The move from PoC to Trial?
