HP OpenNFV Partner Spotlight: Allot Helps CSPs Monetize Networks and Improve Efficiency

Network functions virtualization (NFV) is a transformative technology with the potential to redefine the telecom industry. Some predict the NFV market to reach $8.7 billion by 2020. The reason is clear: NFV is a highly-flexible, software-based solution that enables network functions that are typically handled by dedicated hardware. As a result, NFV dramatically reduces the amount of proprietary hardware necessary to launch and operate network services. For CSPs, NFV provides a paradigm shift in terms of how you design, deploy, and manage networking services.


At Allot, we are proud to be part of the HP OpenNFV Partner Program, an initiative designed to help the telecommunications industry accelerate the development and delivery of new and innovative services through the virtualization of core networks and network functions. HP’s approach to NFV is based on adherence to openness and standards-based technology. The primary benefit of this approach is that it enables any telecom vendor to introduce new solutions on top of the HP OpenNFV platform. This allows CSPs to mix and match components from different vendors to best meet their needs.


Allot’s vTDF: Making Service Chaining More Flexible and Efficient

Our virtual Traffic Detection Function (vTDF) is part of a virtualized Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) network. The virtualized solution includes traffic detection, analytics, policy enforcement and charging solutions. vTDF can be deployed anywhere in the network - from the RAN to the core network, to facilitate application-centric use cases and services.


Our vTDF connects and coordinates the data and control planes for delivering network services. It identifies subscriber-application traffic and enables real time policy enforcement and charging. Enforcement actions include traffic management, congestion control, online/offline charging, and it supports application-aware service chaining, which becomes more flexible and efficient when implemented in a virtual environment. Such Service Function Chaining can, for example, steer relevant traffic to value -added services, such as our virtualized security solutions for DDoS protection (vServiceProtector) or a network-based solution for End points Content Filtering solution (vWSP).


Tight Integration with HP OpenNFV

Our integration with HP OpenNFV components such as HP NFV Director and HP Helion enables onboarding of our vTDF solution in the HP ecosystem environment. This transition from proprietary equipment installed in a specific topology location to Virtual Network Functions (that can be distributed throughout the network and uniformly managed) enables operators to:

  • Simplify and automate TDF deployment, provisioning and configuration
  • Add elasticity to the network for more fluid and efficient allocation of TDF resources
  • Leverage distributed cloud infrastructure to implement complex use cases with ease

We are expanding our collaboration with HP to showcase the Service Function Chaining based on intelligent traffic steering. The traffic can be steered dynamically based on service provider policy, subscriber application and/or usage profiles to Allot’s virtualized security solutions.


We are excited to partner with HP and leverage the great value the HP NFV architecture enables. As a technology partner, we collaborate closely with HP on innovation, integration and support for the HP OpenNFV infrastructure stack based on recommendations from the European Telecommunications Standards Institute’s (ETSI) NFV Industry Specification Groups (ISG). 


Using our vTDF, service providers can enjoy cost savings, reduced time to market for new and complex services, deployment flexibility as well as lower operational and capital expenditures. They can analyze Over-the-Top (OTT) traffic patterns and translate patterns into innovative service plans including rapid rollout. In short: vTDF offers a great opportunity for CSPs to monetize their data!
