How NFV enables CSP cloud services

by: Vinay Saxena, Chief Architect, NFV

Communications service providers (CSPs) want to provide cloud services to their customers to build new revenue streams and compete with the over-the-top (OTT) players that have been dominating this fast-growing market. We made cloud an integral part of the HP OpenNFV Program to enable CSPs to quickly develop new cloud offerings based on network functions virtualization (NFV).

Today carriers run some cloud services on a network in an appliance farm, with each service requiring its own specialized hardware. With NFV, these services can be run in a virtualized environment, using a common pool of server elements.

With all services able to run on the same hardware, which is the same hardware used by enterprise IT, CSPs can take advantage of the buying power of IT and achieve efficiencies of scale. Rather than investing large amounts of time and resources in deploying specialized hardware, CSPs can deploy hardware which can run any service.

HP OpenNFV and cloud

Cloud is an intricate, integral part of the HP OpenNFV Program. Cloud is part of our architecture, which enables carriers to offer a telco- or carrier-grade cloud to their customers. OpenNFV helps power NFV deployments with cloud services of varying types, including Infrastructure-as-a-Service, Platform-as-a-Service and even Applications-as-a-Service.

HP has a very rich heritage in cloud. HP Helion, announced today, is a portfolio of cloud products and services that enable organizations to build, manage, and consume workloads in hybrid IT environments. In addition, customers have embraced HP CloudSystem and made it a leader in the market with more than 1,100 customers in 75 countries. HP CloudSystem Enterprise was one of the first OpenStack-based private cloud solutions, and, as one of the top contributors to Openstack, HP continues to build on this capability. And we are experts in telco with over 5,000 telco professionals on staff.

We understand that CSPs want to have a robust cloud services offering, and we have what it takes to help them on that journey.
