KDDI R&D Labs vEPC PoC a TM Forum Catalyst Showcase Winner!


TM Forum’s Catalyst Showcase winner for ‘Best Application of Frameworx’ at TM Forum Live! this year was KDDI R&D Labs, for its NFV Proof of Concept (PoC). KDDI is one of Japan’s leading carriers. The vEPC PoC by KDDI R&D Labs with HP, Cisco, Nokia and Tech-Mahindra was recognized as the most effective implementation of a PoC for a Frameworx best practice or standard, demonstrating the value of its assets and encouraging adoption.


The NFV PoC focuses on enabling the operator to observe network services from the Unified NOC to monitor service impact and alarms. The automated fault recovery solution is a traditional and virtualized hybrid model of a mobile network service. When hardware problems occurred within the virtualization infrastructure resources, the VNF demonstrated automatic recovery. The fact that alarms and service impact were displayed on the service monitoring screen prevented NOC operator distraction, allowing full focus on network service status and resolution of issues to maintain the SLA.


While many NFV PoCs focus on instantiation and automatic recovery of individual VNFs, the KDDI PoC went further, demonstrating the removal of OSS network operational complexity from the ‘Closed Loop’ working environment.  


For this PoC, KDDI R&D Labs chose HP NFV Director for its NFV Orchestration environment and to build the OSS layer, with HP TeMIP, HP Unified Correlation Analyzer and HP Unified OSS Console. The virtualization foundation was built on a COTS IT server, implementing multi-vendor software, 5G network-ready. VNF is proven as a CPE/EPC/FW by combining software components with active network services. The PoC architecture was based on the ETSI concept for an orchestration resource status for each layer with the horizontal isolation of the resource plane, the control plane and the application.


In a live operating environment, Assurance and Recovery are different operations for the operations engineer. Correlation analysis functionality for alarm and infrastructure resources can provide an automated fault recovery process.


Although a seemingly simple demonstration, from a network monitoring point of view, this PoC demo proves that it is possible to isolate virtualization foundation failure in a multi-vendor open environment. Most importantly, the demo was performed repeatedly without any problems.
