Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Red Hat have partnered to accelerate the deployment of network functions virtualization (NFV) solutions based on fully open, production-ready, standards-based infrastructures. With the HPE Red Hat OpenStack Platform, communications service providers (CSPs) can deploy a carrier grade data center using Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenStack.

HPE Red Hat OpenStack Platform for network functions virtualization (NFV) is a carrier-grade OpenStack platform plus a compute and network virtualization offering for NFV that enables CSPs to deploy NFV applications on open source software platforms. Acting as a production-ready foundation, HPE and Red Hat help CSPs create, deploy, scale, and manage a secure and reliable OpenStack cloud architectures for providers all across the world. Combining the power of Red Hat Enterprise Linux with Red Hat OpenStack technology, we deliver a scalable and secure foundation to build and manage the cloud using HPE hardware infrastructure.

HPE Red Hat OpenStack Platofrm depends on Linux as the operating environment for its services, access to hardware resources, and integration with existing or new systems. HPE Red Hat Ceph Storageโ€™s highly redundant, software-defined storage along with HPE Red Hat OpenStack Platform is an integrated, optimized, and managed foundation for production-ready clouds. Both HPE Red Hat OpenStack and HPE Red Hat Ceph Storage depend on Linux for system-wide performance, scalability, and security and as an operating system for the guest applications running in these virtual environments.

The HPE Red Hat OpenStack Platform accelerates CSPs transformation towards becoming digital service providers with:

Platforms for High-Performance and Network Throughput Improvement

The HPE Red Hat OpenStack Virtualization Hypervisor provides superior performance for OpenStack workloads. Based on Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM), the hypervisor holds record-breaking performance scores. HPE engineering teams have validated HPE NIC cards with the HPE Red Hat OpenStack Platform for typical NFV use cases on HPE server platforms. Jointly both HPE and Red Hat have partnered to provide optimum network throughput using SRIOV, OVS-DPDK, and PCI-PT on HPE infrastructure.

Flexibility and Scalability

Customers can use HPE Red Hat OpenStack Platform for traditional scale-up virtualization with new OpenStack scale-out workloads. HPEโ€™s portfolio allows for more choices in NEBS compliant CPUโ€™s, a range of memory options, NIC options, connectivity options and storage drives (HDD, SSD and NVMe) that are validated with the Red Hat OpenStack Platform.  The HPE Red Hat OpenStack Platform's compute and storage nodes can be augmented with additional storage and memory in-rack or in additional racks to scale out the cloud deployment as needed.

Enhanced Security and Lifecycle

HPE Red Hat OpenStack Platform comes with SELinux military-grade security technologies that prevent intrusions and protects data when running in service provider OpenStack clouds. This provides stable, long-term support for releases of OpenStack and Linux that are supported for an enterprise & carrier production lifecycle โ€” beyond the six-month release cycle of the OpenStack community versions.

HPE customers are given an extended option of up to five years on OpenStack releases and will get software updates after complete validation and testing for service provider needs. Furthermore, HPE Pointnext offers complete end-to-end solution level support and technical consulting to help customers navigate through their NFV journey.

Rich Partner Ecosystem

HPE and Red Hat have built the worldโ€™s largest certified OpenStack partner ecosystem for Red Hat OpenStack Platform. It includes HPEโ€™s myriad of certified servers, NICs and third-party software, plus a Red Hat OpenStack specific certification program with partners in the compute, storage, networking, ISV software, and service fields.

High Availability and Disaster Recovery

HPE Red Hat OpenStack Platform maintains high availability and policy-driven measures, including infrastructure failure recognition, automated host node evacuation, downed node fencing, and automatically restarts workloads on remaining available hosts. The HPE Red Hat OpenStack Platform with HPE infrastructure supports NIC bonding at the server level to help utilize the available network bandwidth and fault-tolerance. HPE and Red Hat also provide high availability (HA) for KVM instances like, compute node failure detection and auto-evacuation in the KVM region and in the live migration in the KVM region facilitating high availability of VNFs.

Certified with HPE Storage Solutions

HPE NFV platforms with Red Hat OpenStack Platforms gives the customers a choice of using HPE Red Hat Ceph Storage, HPE 3Par Storage, HPE Nimble Storage or HPE StoreVirtual VSA storage. HPE storage options are continuously being tested to work optimally with HPE Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and HPE Red Hat OpenStack Platforms.  HPE has tested and deployed HPE Red Hat Ceph Storage for highly redundant, scale-out block, object, and image storage. HPE is able to offer granular 1TB (Terabyte) HPE Red Hat Ceph Storage subscriptions for customers who want to granularly scale their storage.
