Saar Gillai, GM NFV and COO Cloud, Discusses the Cloudification of Network Functions with TelecomTV

Saar Gillai, GM of NFV and COO of Cloud, sat down with Telecom TV at SDN Openflow World Congress to discuss how NFV relates to the cloud and how HP plans to leverage our expertise to ease the journey to telco cloud and NFV.

Key takeaways from Gillai interview:

  • Gillai states that most network functions are monolithic solutions while cloud is a multi-tenant architecture that works on scale out. There are different stages in this process. The first stage, Gillai says, is virtualization followed by cloudification. Cloudification is improving, and with the help of HP, we’re now able to orchestrate and automate.
  • When asked about the value of building carrier grade, Gillai explains how running a network is like running a car - navigation and audio are like ‘applications’ where the engine and wheels are ‘network functions’. If the apps fail, there is no big problem – the car still works. However, if a cylinder ceases up, there would be a noticeable problem. Gillai goes on to explain that network functions have to be reliable, much like the engine of the car. Failure is not an option. Currently ‘cars’ are overdesigned to never fail – much like an engine guaranteed not to fail for 100,000 miles.  With carrier grade NFV and cloud technologies, it’s built to manage higher frequency of failures – the engine may fail before 100,000 miles, but the switch over is instantaneous, so the person driving would never know.
  • Gillai continues by explaining why HP is so well-positioned to provide this service to our CSP customers.  Carriers are looking for a cloud management platform that allows them the flexibility to build their network in a way that best suits their needs.  HP is a leader in OpenStack and has been working with the industry to address reliability issues. The solution includes elements in Linux – something we gain via our Wind River partnership. Paired with our industry leading Helion Cloud, HP is well posed to help CSPs through their journey to NFV.
