Cloud computing—keeping the promises

It’s been said that promises are like babies—easy to make, hard to deliver. That’s the situation a lot of CIOs and IT operations managers find themselves in with cloud computing. We’ve sold business users on the advantages of private and hybrid clouds, but now many organizations are struggling to deliver them. Let’s look for a minute at what’s been promised and why delivery is often falling short.


First the promises. Based on what we have told them about cloud computing, users expect:


  • Services to be always available

  • Capacity on demand

  • Agility to handle changes

  • Scalability to meet unanticipated business needs

That’s exactly what the industry has promised us cloud computing provides. Where some organizations are falling short is in managing and operating the environment to deliver the services. To deliver on the promises of cloud you must upgrade old service delivery processes, and that requires new skills and a new set of management tools. For example, to achieve the elasticity promised, you must put a service catalog in place, and you must automate change and release management processes. If your existing processes are weak or non-existent, the problem is exacerbated.


We have been working with our customers to help them deliver on the promises of cloud computing. Each situation is different, so we like to start at the beginning. What SLAs must you deliver on? How are you performing against the SLAs? What skills do you have? What processes are in place? We look at your current processes to determine where weaknesses exist. Then we can create a plan to strengthen your current operations position.

For example, since cloud computing is new, many organizations don’t yet have the skills needed.
