Discover 2012 Frankfurt: What you need to know about moving your datacenter to the Cloud

The lively city of Frankfurt, Germany was the setting for HP Discover 2012. It was a great show, packed with engaging seminars and workshops, a dynamic exhibit floor – featuring new and exciting developments in Cloud, Storage and Big Data – and lots of opportunities to connect with other IT professionals.

If you couldn’t make it to HP Discover in Frankfurt last month, you missed a great show. (Start planning now to attend Discover 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada or Barcelona, Spain!

In the meantime, in this second installment of our Discover 2012 wrap-up series, we’ll be covering some of the themes and resources you need to be “in the know”. This week’s featured topic: What you need to know about the financial, physical and cultural implications of moving your datacenter to the Cloud.

Cloud Challenges & Choice

We start with a blog from HP Expert and Master Cloud Strategist, Jeremy Brann. In "The journey to a cloud enabled data center", Jeremy positions the three categories of challenges that large organizations face when they’re looking to ramp up cloud adoption.

In the blog-post "Demand choice for your cloud journey", also written by Jeremy, he discusses why choice should be a focal point of any cloud strategy, and how to measure this minimum qualifier when evaluating cloud offerings in the marketplace.

Cloud Security

HP Expert and Chief Architect Tari Schreider brings his extensive industry knowledge and years of experience to Security-related customer engagements. His expertise spans security operations centers, disaster recovery and business continuity, to risk, threat and vulnerability management. In his blog "Is your InfoSec Program Polymorphic?" he compares the InfoSec program to a living organism comprised of genes that complete its anatomy.

In "Do Cloud Service Providers Need to Tighten Up?" He asks: Could your company afford seven hours or more of downtime each year? He reports, via the International Working Group on Cloud Computing Resiliency (IWGCR) , that the top 13 cloud service providers reported 568 hours of downtime for the period of 2007 to early 2012.

Mapping your Cloud Journey

Bert van Rij, a senior IT Strategist here at HP, delivered 2 informative sessions at Discover Frankfurt. Check out these presentations to find out more about developing a comprehensive roadmap for your Cloud Journey.

Cloud-Enabling Your Datacenter

If you remember Lou Gerstner’s best-selling business book Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance? Leading a Great Enterprise through Dramatic Change, you’ll get a kick out of the title of Chris Coggrave’s blog "Make your elephant cloud-ready". Chris is Worldwide Director of HP’s Data Center IT Infrastructure Service business, and the elephant, of course, is today’s enterprise data center. Before you can move that pachyderm to the cloud, says Chris, you’ve got to be able to see the whole animal – not just bits of it.

Chris explores the theme of cloud-readiness and describes a converged approach that combines service delivery models, IT assets, and facilities in a 3-part video series recorded at Discover Frankfurt:
