Enhancing the business value of BYOD and Mobility

If you’re not alert, things can slip up on you. There is a point when people stop asking, “Should we do this?” and start asking, “Why isn’t this completed yet?” It’s getting that way with BYOD.

In an earlier blog I highlighted the fact that BYOD is so widespread as to be inevitable in one form or another. But now the business has stopped asking IT if users can access corporate data and applications with their personal devices and simply started asking why their experience isn’t better. (Read my previous blog on the mobility experience.) There’s a reason the BYOD tables have turned on IT: end user productivity. The new challenge isn’t just to manage and control BYOD to protect corporate data, it’s to further enhance the productivity gains that have driven BYOD adoption in the first place.

A few years ago business use of smartphones followed the PC paradigm: if you need one for business purposes, the business will supply one, and IT will manage it and control its use. Smartphone use in the business context was seen as a convenience, even an affectation.

Now it’s the norm. The growth of smart mobile devices in people’s “always-connected” personal lives and the blending of personal and business time lets employees be always connected to the business as well. They can choose when and how to be productive for work. And as the business saw that people could respond in seconds, we came to expect it and to rely upon it for the ready conduct of business. Whether for personal convenience or business gain, it is net-new productivity—people working smarter not just harder.

So the pressure is now on IT not just to support employees’ personal devices, but to assure the availability and quality of the  mobile experience and to enhance that experience to make people even more productive and more in charge of their own lives.

We’ve been through this with PCs, right? But BYOD is different.

In the past IT has been able to deliver secure, quality services by controlling every link in the delivery chain—servers, applications, networks and user devices—and by fitting our processes to those elements. With BYOD, however, we have lost control not only of the users’ devices, but of a big piece of the network that connects them to our data center. There are a dozens of device types, OSs and networks that we must accommodate. Operations processes and tools must handle incidents arising in these devices and networks. Release cycles for mobile apps are much shorter—and often outside our control—so we must upgrade change and release management processes to handle that.

But even with new challenges, IT can use BYOD to make users more productive and the business more efficient and agile. Like any other business result, it requires some commitment and some investment. We can guide you through this process and help you set a strategic direction. And, if it’s right for your business, we can implement HP and partner technologies to help you capture the productivity gains promised by mobility and BYOD.

Learn more about these challenges at HP Discover Barcelona in my session “Employee Productivity: From Zero to Productive in Minutes” (DT2090) Wednesday at 11.30 a.m. in Discussion Theatre 4.2. Or visit the demo we are holding at Booth 2364 in the Mobility Solution area of the Solutions Expo in Hall 4.

I look forward to seeing you in Barcelona!
