Hybrid IT with All of the Benefits and Fewer Headaches: Introducing HPE GreenLake Hybrid Cloud

Don_Randall

The breathtaking rise of hybrid IT shows no signs of leveling off. Workload deployment venues are rapidly shifting away from traditional legacy IT environments. In a recent survey of IT decision-makers by 451 Research1, 30 percent of respondents said they expected to deploy the majority of workloads to a public cloud provider over the next couple of years; 38 percent saw private cloud as the deployment venue of choice by 2020. Companies rightly see hybrid IT as not just a way to reduce TCO for IT assets, but also to fend off competitive disruptions and fuel top-line revenue growth.2

At the same time, many business and IT leaders are finding that the road to those benefits isn’t always as straight and smooth as they expected it to be.

Four major speedbumps on the cloud journey:

  1. CloudOps is challenging. Companies increasingly rely on a combination of on- and off-premises infrastructure to provide the right mix of cloud services. Hybrid clouds have many moving parts, and the expected agility can be hard to achieve. Managing them calls for a very different approach from what’s worked in the past. CloudOps is fast, cloud-native and automated – a very different animal from traditional IT Ops, with its siloed processes and long time-horizons for significant changes. The result? Operations can get in the way of the desired agility gains from moving to the cloud.
  2. Visibility is incomplete. Companies often struggle to pull together solid data on cost and usage. It’s all too easy to over-provision cloud services or infrastructure, to fail to monitor them and stop usage when it’s no longer needed, or to implement duplicate instances. Lack of multi-cloud visibility can get expensive. By 2020, organizations that lack cost optimization processes will average 40% overspend in public cloud, according to a recent report by Gartner3.
  3. The right skills are hard to find. Moving to hybrid cloud means navigating a host of new third-party and open-source tools, unfamiliar APIs, and different interfaces from different cloud vendors. The learning curve can be steep, and cloud-native skills are at a premium. Many IT shops will need to skill up or hire.
  4. Compliance risk is worrisome. Good governance is essential for hybrid cloud. Without a way to explicitly identify the risk and compliance needs for each workload – not to mention monitoring and enforcing – organizations may end up putting data into the wrong cloud service without the proper precautions, or in the wrong country, or into systems that lack the ability to audit.

A Better Way

To help businesses meet these challenges and unlock the full value of hybrid cloud, HPE has announced HPE GreenLake Hybrid Cloud, the newest in our portfolio of consumption-based IT solutions. Like all of our GreenLake solutions, HPE GreenLake Hybrid Cloud is designed, delivered and operated by HPE Pointnext and installed on your premises, with a straightforward cloud-like financial model that lets you pay only for what you consume. Here’s a quick look at how it works...Greenlake hybrid cloud blog image 1.pngHPE GreenLake Hybrid Cloud

First thing to notice is that HPE GreenLake Hybrid Cloud spans both private and public clouds, delivering the same experience no matter where your workloads are running. On the private-cloud side, the solution runs on HPE ProLiant for Microsoft Azure Stack, a pre-tested, factory-integrated hybrid cloud solution that enables you to run Azure-consistent services in the data center. It provides a fast, easy, simple experience for developing and managing Azure Stack services that are consistent with Azure public cloud, so you can easily move them to that venue as needed. On the public-cloud side, the infrastructure can come from Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services (stay tuned for more vendors going forward).

For both public and private clouds, we provide global operational services from HPE Pointnext, infused by expertise and IP from Cloud Technology Partners (CTP), an HPE company. You get a unified, enterprise-grade support experience . You get HPE Adaptive Management Services, which lets you leverage the skills, people, and processes of HPE’s Global Operations Centers to monitor and operate your infrastructure and applications. Plus, Cloud Technology Partners’ deep expertise, best practices and tools help you run, scale, and optimize your apps in the public cloud.

At the highest, overarching level, our cloud management platform, HPE OneSphere, pulls it all together, delivering a centralized view of your hybrid cloud operations from a single pane of glass.

4 Big Benefits

So what’s the payoff for your business? HPE GreenLake Hybrid Cloud offers:

Savings. Because it’s a consumption-based solution, you pay only for what you use. Plus, CTP’s unique automated cost control services help you reduce cloud spend, and keep it that way, across all LOBs. For one customer, this operating model drove a cost savings of $1 million out of $3.5 million spend.Greenlake hybrid cloud blog image 2.png

Speed. HPE GreenLake Hybrid Cloud accelerates your journey to cloud and time to value. A cloud-native, automated operating model means you can get your apps into the market quicker. It also increases the speed of IT operations, enabling you to make changes more quickly. And with unified support for all of your private and public clouds, you don’t have to waste time dealing with multiple vendors.

Simplicity. With CloudOps skills and processes provided by HPE, you can cut the “heavy lifting” for your staffers, freeing them up to add new business value. You can bypass the usual ramp-up of skills or forays into the cloud talent market.

Help with security and compliance. It’s now possible for cloud-powered companies to be compliant from Day One – and stay that way. CTP’s Continuous Compliance service provides continuous monitoring of over 1,500 IT compliance, corporate governance and regulatory compliance controls, both technical and non-technical.
