Software-defined Data Center: the hottest data center topic, hot from HP Discover

The next level of convergence … programmatic control of the data center … a way to accelerate Cloud value and deliver new services more efficiently … Software-defined Data Center is all of these and more, and it’s rapidly gaining mind-share among IT leaders looking to reduce the mind-numbing complexity of data center management.

SDDC was a major focus at HP Discover in Las Vegas last month. For a quick intro to the topic, why it’s attracting so much attention, and how HP can help companies on their journey to SDDC, check out this video from Chris Coggrave, HP’s Chief Technologist and Strategist for Data Center Consulting.

Although moving workloads to a virtualized environment is crucial for the journey, it’s a mistake to think of SDDC as simply an exercise in virtualization. And given today’s low-cost servers, there may be options you haven’t thought of, as James Cohen notes in this podcast interview with our roving reporter at the event, Ian Jagger. Although Ian jokingly refers to him as “the original Captain Phillips” – a reference to his military background – James is actually HP’s Worldwide Lead, Technical Services Consulting, Consolidation and Virtualization.

For a deeper look at James’ thoughts on virtualization and its role in SDDC, view the slides for his presentation Virtualization: End or means to the software-defined data center.

Ian made data center management a focus of his reporting at Discover: here’s a selection of his posts:
