To add to our growing DevOps portfolio, HPE Education has launched ‘The Phoenix Project DevOps Business Simulation’, a highly interactive and immersive one-day workshop for any organization to explore DevOps principles and concepts.

How does it work? The simulation is based on the iconic book ‘The Phoenix project’. Delegates play characters from the book – In the Parts Unlimited company (which at the start is in trouble), newspaper reports reveal the poor financial performance of the organization. The only way to save the company, making it competitive and profitable is by implementing “The Phoenix Project”, an IT-enabled business transformation. The VP of IT Operations is asked to take the lead of the IT department to ensure that the project gets delivered unhindered. Unfortunately real life gets in the way, resources are limited and there are a backlog of features and enhancements, and business as usual issues that are completely unpredicted. Participants in the workshop assume different roles within the company from IT to the business sponsor – all have their own ideas but there is only one answer - which is DevOps.

The challenge? Participants need to embrace DevOps principles and apply them in this serious business simulation. With up to four rounds, participants work on a variety of IT projects and IT issues with one main focus – to deliver “The Phoenix Project” on time. But remember that real life gets in the way and so, the business keeps coming with new ideas and demands, and events outside the team’s control are just around the corner – good luck!

How did the London launch event go? The launch event provided an introduction to DevOps and three rounds of the business simulation. The aim was to allow a selection of HPE customers to experience the simulation in action and explore some key principles of DevOps. In return we asked for feedback as part of our own continuous improvement program.

Watch the highlights of the launch event:

Who can benefit from the simulation? This simulation is designed for anyone and everyone who is involved with the delivery of IT services (new or legacy). It is not just about “Dev” and Ops”, it is everyone. That is, anyone who has an interest in, or is a stakeholder in a service being delivered to the organization and it should also include representation from the business. In short, people who want to change the IT culture, collaborating to deliver organizational outcomes that realize business value – better, faster, smarter and cheaper.

A key part of the simulation is its flexibility. We have already experienced organizations wanting to deliver their own messages as an additional outcome of the simulation. HPE welcomes and will always encourage this approach, after all, it is your organization and business that must do the work! From “awareness and buy-in”, “team building” (across the different groups) the simulation works for senior management and techies alike – plus whatever messages you want to explore on the day.

Next Steps: Interested in seeing this in action yourself?  Attending HPE Discover? Then come and experience the Phoenix Project Simulation for yourself on Wed 30 Nov between 11-12.30. Reserve your place today.

Our team will also cover the process of transitioning into DevOps, as part of the MoC workshop discussion also at HPE Discover. If you can't get into the DevOps training session, consider taking a seat in the MoC workshop instead.

If you are not able to attend Discover, but are keen to explore what it what it takes to run a DevOps simulation for your organization please contact us using our worldwide web site (you can access your local country site from here) . The Phoenix Project awaits!
