The art of network and mobility transformation (Part 1): Finding a born facilitator

By Kitty Chow, Worldwide Portfolio Marketing Manager, HP Technology Services Networking

Kitty Chow 3.JPGCompanies are taking a hard look at their networks. They have to, because they’re in pretty bad shape. As HP Chief Technologist Yanick Pouffary pointed out at this blog recently, “when compared to other IT domains like server utilization, the network is seen as an expensive user of CAPEX and OPEX resources. Network designs are aged and inflexible. And requests are often met by duplicating or expanding that inflexible environment.” (See Yanick’s post A bright new day for the network—and a quick way to learn about it.)

Many organizations are also being pushed by their employees to offer a corporate mobility experience similar to a consumer experience, often including BYOD. (Check out Craig Partridge’s post The fast track to a future-ready mobility strategy.)

Whether it’s reshaping the network into a platform for innovation, or an overall goal to deliver universal access to people, applications and data from any device, any transformation is much more than a tech fix. It is, in a sense, an art.

For starters, alignment is critical for any transformational initiative. It’s also critical for defining strategy. And it takes strong facilitation to achieve alignment amongst teams. If you’ve decided to engage consulting expertise to help with your transformation, you should be looking for a born facilitator. Here are three questions you should ask yourself:

1. Does this consultant really get what you’re saying? Does he or she really listen? Promote open conversation? Does he or she have a point of view, but show willingness to build on it?

2. Can this expert provide the vision? Can he synthesize information and turn it into insights? Does she have a structure and framework in mind – including an end game?

3. Can this candidate start the ball rolling?  Does she know when to close conversations, and when it’s time to make a decision? Can he handle the practical details as well as the overall vision? Is this candidate always present at meetings, and well prepared?

Experience the art of facilitation with the HP Mobility Transformation Experience Workshop and the HP Connectivity Transformation Experience Workshop. These one-day strategy workshops focus on driving alignment, jointly building an initiative roadmap with our customers, and providing practical next steps which include quick wins.
