The promise of Network Functions Virtualization: a podcast interview with Alastair Winner

on ‎02-24-2014 04:56 PM

If your organization is an ISP or telecom provider, you’re no doubt aware that your industry is under competitive pressure from over-the-top (OTT) players – providers of services that ride on top of traditional IP connectivity, but don’t generate any revenue for the carrier. OTTs range from app storefronts to big video content providers like Netflix. VoIP players alone will take a $386 billion bite out of telco revenues between 2012 and 2018, according to research firm Ovum (reported in this article).

Communications service providers struggle to match the agility and rapid-fire innovation of OTTs, but a new Network Functions Virtualization program announced today by HP will help level the playing field. I caught up with Alastair Winner, HP Technology Services' VP of Networking and Mobility, to get an overview of NFV and how it can help carriers accelerate time to market and drive new revenue.
