How is VCT supposed to work in a V1910?

I've been trying to use VCT in Device->VCT from the admin GUI, and I'm confused!
Is the other end of the cable from the tested port supposed to be terminated in something special for VCT to return reasonable results?

I've tried it unterminated, which returns abnormal (open) and a reasonable estimate of the known physical cable length, but when connected to a router or a switch, vct returns abnormal(open) or abnormal(short) and never normal.
The length returned is possibly reasonable in some cases and unreasonably short in other cases.

Isn't the HP 1910 Gigabit Ethernet Switch Series User Guide (here) clear about VCT? see VCT Virtual Cable Test function of 1910 [*] explained at sheet 112 of 579 (Page 99).

[*] Better if it runs on latest R1518P01.

What is missing is what the returned result would mean with different equipment types at the other end.

1000baseT at the other end returns meaningful results as would leaving it unconnected, adding a few meters of cable and/or connecting a shorting plug

However 100baseT returns no interesting info.
