ML350 G5 with WIndows 2003 64 bits daily crashes

My customer has a G5 with Windows 2003 R2 64 bits, SP2. Almost everyday, the server crashes with no error messages in the event log other than the usual Unplanned crash. I ran the HP Diag tools, but no sign of hardware problem. Windows is not giving me any message either. I updated the server to the latest drivers, Bios, etc, but still crashing. Anyone experience this with the 64 bits?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi,
1) Anything in Integrated management log ?
2) Did you tried disable ASR ?
3) If you have another ML350 G5 server try to swap SCSI drives between servers and check... . If in new server you will have same problem - it is Windows problem, if in new server no crashes - you have hardware failure

And I don't think that it is 64-bit specific problem, we run many win2003/win2008 64-bit servers without problem

Re: ML350 G5 with WIndows 2003 64 bits daily crashes

Thanks for your reply. I do not have another G5 to try your suggestions with this customer.
I also have other 2003/2008 64 bits without problems with other customers.
There are no message in the Integrated Management log.

I am assuming you suggested to turn the ASR off to see if we will get any error messages at the console?
I did turn it off, so we will see.
Thanks.

Re: ML350 G5 with WIndows 2003 64 bits daily crashes

Are you sure you have the last PSP? Firmware maintennance CD ?
have a look here:

Other:
You should have the possibility to analyze the minidump of the server. Here's a smart article on how to do this:

Re: ML350 G5 with WIndows 2003 64 bits daily crashes

Yes I did have the latest one. Yesterday, I re-installed all the updates just in case.

I also remove the ASR so I will see if we are getting any error on the console since none are logged in the system logs. Hopefully, there will be a memory dump as well.
Thanks,

don't forget to set the server to use the small dump images (64k) in the system properties->advanced->startup and recovery.

Re: ML350 G5 with WIndows 2003 64 bits daily crashes

It just crashed again! It did reboot automatically, I thought removing the ASR flag in the OS was enough, but I now realize I also need to turn it off in the Bios. No Minidum were created.
I will be on site tonight and change the ASR in the BIOS. I will also remove the UPS, just in case.
The crashes do happen at anytime in the day, but most of the time around 9:30 in the morning.

Re: ML350 G5 with WIndows 2003 64 bits daily crashes

Real,
Your problem is very strange.

Do you notice some ASR events in the IML?
if not probably disabling ASR won't do the trick, but disable it anyway.

Did you take a look at the ILO logs?
ILO logs even power removed/restored events, so if it is a problem with the power or hardware probably you can find something there.

Please don't think i'm crazy, but:

-check the revision of the power supplies: they must be identical: i have some problems in the past due to this.
-again give a run of FW mnt CD 8.60, if you didn't it yesterday.

If nothing works i suggest you to call HP (i guess the server is under warranty, right?).

They will probably start asking you to collect HPSReports (a tool of the HP support that can go deeper than simple IML).
THEN, if they care, they can start changing hardware pieces until the prob. is gone....

Re: ML350 G5 with WIndows 2003 64 bits daily crashes

Thanks for the uggestions and I will check it.
Last night, I removed the UPS, change both power cords(!), made sure both are going to different power circuit, Disable the ASR in the BIOS and will see today.
