Booting from XP24K THP lun

Hi,
Are there any issues with booting Win2008 Cluster servers from XP24K Thin Provisioned Lun. Is this supported? Is anyone doing this currently?

Any comments or opinions will be usefull.

Thanks
D

Re: Booting from XP24K THP lun

You should find if HP supports it or not from HP.

However, I have booted Windows Server 2003 and 2008 server from ThP LUNs in a working and reliable pre-prod environment. They were clustered though, but I cannot see why this would make a difference.

Hi Nigel,
These will be clustered also, did you come across any gotcha's along the way?

Re: Booting from XP24K THP lun

Apologies DJMC. My previous post should have said "these were NOT clustered though". A slightly important word to miss out. So mine were not clustered.

However, it should make no difference. The ThP side of things is handled by the XP in the background. The LUN on the front end is presented out exactly the same as any other OPEN-V LUN and handles SCSI commands and reserves etc exactly the same as with other LUNs.

No gotchas so to speak regarding booting from ThP LUNs, although a few best practices re defrags and how to format NTFS filesystems etc if you want to make use of over-provisioning.....

check out my blogsite where Ive been posting on ThP and how it works under the hood on the XP -

Later on today I will be udding a post with a link to a ThP best practices document I have written. Might be of use to you.

BTW I use the HDS terms for ThP (HDP) on my blog but the technology is EXACTLY the same (ThP and the XP is Hitachi storage resold by HP and HDS. its exactly the same other than the front doors are different).

Re: Booting from XP24K THP lun

Sivakumar MJ, thats an old version that you have posted.

Ive written two revisions since that version and its now at version 1.3 with sections on ThP Theory, Free Page Table and Zero Page Reclaim. All interesting if you want to know how ThP works under the hood.

I update the document every month or so, or when major new features to ThP are available such as Zero Page Reclaim........
