I don't see how that can happen. A file is a file, regardles how sparse the file is, it should have all the space allocated. There is no such thing as disk level compression of sparse files. (or is there with the XP?)
On the XP side do the numbers add up? In other words if you add the du numbers or the ll numbers do they add up to the overall volume/filesystem size from du and bdf? If you get any oracle downtime, try copying the files while oracle is down.

No, on the XP128 the file sizes for the du and bdf do not add up. They only add up after I do a "cp" command to the VA7410. And the differences are mostly on any temp.dbf datafiles. Probably if I recreate this temp.dbf datafile on the VA7410, the numbers would show a lot less than the 2GB allocated just like the XP128. Weird.

The final resolution is that temp.dbs files are sparse files and they can overcommit the FS. Thanks to all especially TTr, I've learned alot.
