Modernize your legacy applications through containerization
Yes, you CAN run monolithic applications in containers--without rearchitecting them.
Container technology is big these days. From humble beginnings in the late 1990s and early 2000s, containerization of applications is now immensely popular due to Kubernetes and other tools. Enterprise IT organizations worldwide are embracing containers to automate deploy modern applications at scale.
A recent CIO.com article, Why enterprise IT organization will benefit from application containerization, provides interesting container growth stats and summarizes their benefits. The second half of the article I found particularly interesting though. The author, HPEโs Richard Hatheway, details how containers are now allowing organizations to modernize legacy applications โ without rearchitecting them.
The challenges of modernizing older apps
According to Hatheway, enterprises are adopting containers and embracing cloud-native microservices architectures to accelerate application development and innovation in a more efficient way.
โWhile itโs straightforward to deploy modern, cloud-native applications in containers, the reality is that these apps represent only a small portion of enterprise applications,โ Hatheway explains. โMost enterprise applications today are still non-cloud-native, with a monolithic architecture and persistent data storage.โ
He goes on to state the need to modernize these older applications is one of the major drivers of containerization. The challenge is how can IT run monolithic applications in containers without rearchitecting them, which is a time-consuming, complex, and expensive process. And as enterprise IT organizations move from development and testing to production environments, security and data persistence issues must also be addressed.
How HPE can help
Enterprise IT organizations are adopting and integrating containers based on the needs of their business. Yet, they are also making implementation decisions based on their familiarity with container technology. Regardless of where a business is on its containerization journey, HPE can help.
HPE Ezmeral Runtime Enterprise is the industryโs first enterprise-grade container orchestration platform designed to run modern applications (both cloud-native and non-cloud-native) with persistent data. HPE Ezmeral Runtime Enterprise deploys 100% open-source Kubernetes for orchestration, provides a state-of-the-art file system and data fabric for persistent container storage, and provides enterprises with the ability to deploy non-cloud-native AI and analytics workloads in containers.
Hatheway explains that because of these capabilities, enterprise IT departments can now easily extend the agility and efficiency benefits of containers to more of their enterprise applications. It doesnโt matter if the applications are running on bare-metal or virtualized infrastructure, on premises, in hybrid- and multi-cloud environments, or at the edge.
For enterprise IT organizations who donโt want to spend time maintaining their Kubernetes platforms, HPE Ezmeral Runtime Enterprise offers a simple solution. To learn more, check out Hathewayโs recent blog about analyst firm ISG recognizing HPE Ezmeral Runtime Enterprise as a Kubernetes platform solutions leader.
The HPE Ezmeral Runtime Enterprise platform provides capabilities and features that increase the speed of application development and improve productivity. Using HPE Ezmeral Runtime Enterprise, enterprise IT organization benefit from greater efficiencies and portability, while also transforming and modernizing their applications.
Donโt be left behind
Enterprises today are adopting and using containers for all their applications โ wherever theyโre located.
โAs enterprises become more digitally focused and begin digital transformation initiatives, containerization makes sense, especially considering application modernization requirements,โ Hatheway concludes. โThe use of containers allows enterprises to make both cloud-native and non-cloud-native (i.e., legacy) applications easier to deploy, scale, and manage.โ
