Everyone Is Watching: Flash Storage for Video Surveillance

Did you know that according to industry reports, the global video surveillance storage market is expected to grow from US$4.90 billion in 2013 to US$10.41 billion by 2018 – with an estimated compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.3% from 2013 to 2018.

Right along with this growth trend, we see that video surveillance storage is emerging from simple data recordings to a more 3PAR video surveillance_blog.jpgsophisticated storage of data. What’s more, storage is just a simple piece of the puzzle, as information extraction and analysis needs have arisen as prominent and complex issues.

Traditional video surveillance storage solutions based on hard-disk drives (HDDs) is often challenged with limited throughput resulting in a loss of critical video quality. They lack the ability to serve simultaneous reads and writes without dropping frames, impacting the ability to recover from failures or perform timely or accurate analytics and this shortcomings of HDD storage will only become more pronounced as video surveillance cameras are being upgraded to 4K resolution. The impact of high-resolution cameras on storage systems is dramatic.

With the changes in video surveillance come the need for changes to your storage systems to meet the needs of the surveillance user.

Twenty years back, tapes were adopted for the storage and gave way to disk based systems. Then stand-alone DVRs migrated to RAID-protected NVRs. Today it’s flash storage that is driving to meet the storage requirements of today’s intelligent video surveillance.

Why flash?

Utilizing flash storage for video surveillance eliminate many of the shortcomings of traditional HDD-based video surveillance solutions HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage is flash-optimized unified storage that enables the easy provisioning of block volumes on high performance SSDs for the recording of camera feeds and adjacent file shares on high capacity NL HDDs for the economic archiving of the recorded videos.
