Object storage, Scality RING & HPE GreenLake: Consumption-based on-premises private cloud solution
On the road to Hybrid IT: Learn how HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING and HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity puts you in the driverโs seat with a new consumption-based model for on-premises infrastructure with cloud-scale economics.
Imagine the difference between owning a car and paying just for using the car (think something like a Zipcar or Zoomcar service) while enjoying the full ownership of the vehicle. Confused? Let me break it down further: When you buy a car, you pay for the price of the car along with insurance. You are also responsible for maintaining it and paying for the fuel costs as per your usage. Owning a car costs much more than what you thought it would. Unless you have high usage every day, it makes lot of economic sense NOT to buy a car.
But how about an alternative solution? A solution where you can have a personal car driven only by you and you can park it in your garage BUT without actually paying for the car. All you need is to pay as per your usage while avoiding having to pay a huge upfront cost plus any ongoing additional maintenance costs.
This week, I am playing off the parallels between the appeal of having such a consumption-based model for your car and now for your object storage solution. Thatโs because we just announced the new HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity support for HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING. Iโm very excited to tell you more about benefits offered to our customers with this new consumption-based model for our object storage offering.
Managing your petabyte scale data with HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING
HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING is a software-defined storage platform that is density-optimized to allow organizations to seamlessly scale to petabytes and beyond in less physical space and without compromising data availability and durability. HPE Apollo 4200 (2U form factor) and HPE Apollo 4510 (4U form factor) servers are the foundation for HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING, giving you a choice in platforms to meet your requirements.
Scality RING running on HPE Apollo hardware combines object storage software and industry -standard servers to provide low cost, reliable, flexible, centralized management that your organization needs for large-scale unstructured data. The HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING creates a solution with a lower TCO than traditional SAN and NAS storage vendors, while providing greater data protection for current and future large-scale storage needs. The combination of the Scality RING and hyper-scale HPE Apollo servers has been deployed in numerous projects as a future-proof solution for petabyte-scale object applications.
HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity for consumption-based Infrastructure
HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity is a pay-per-use, on-premises IT infrastructure solution that enables the agility and economics of a public cloud experience with the control and performance benefits of on-premises IT. You can set up IT capacity, pay monthly based on usage, and easily scale up or down without a capital outlay or a lengthy IT procurement process.
With HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity, youโre always prepared for changes in demand, whether itโs a seasonal spike in traยญffic to your website or a new business application that grows quickly. As with the cloud, the HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity model allows you to provision capacity in a matter of minutes from the ready-to-use buยญffer in your data center infrastructure. Itโs like a public-cloud experience for on-premises ITโno month-long procurement cycle and no upfront capital costs.
Cloud-scale economics = HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING + HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity
Object storage, where files are stored alongside each other in a storage pool rather than in a hierarchy, makes the data easier to store, process, and access. The use of an object storage system becomes particularly beneficial to environments with large amounts of unstructured data.
Combined with HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity, you'll find it easier to budget for your IT operation costs while also being able to expand capacity quickly to meet business demands. Benefits include:
- Consumption-based storage solution allows you to start small and not worry about the exponential data growth; Typically, Scality customers either make an initial purchase for 2-to-3 years of storage needs (needing a large CAPEX up front), or they buy a small amount initially and then start to expand after 6-to-12 months. This consumption-based model will eliminate the need for a large CAPEX upfront.
- Payments grow or shrink based on metered average monthly usage, aligning cash flows to the business.
- Installed capacity includes additional storage space as a buffer, so that you can be ready for growth, the next project, or the next customer, without the constraints of traditional IT.
- The support for Scality RING within an HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity deal will be delivered by Scality. You get support for the HPE hardware as part of the support component with HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity.
Toss the old rules with IT procurement and provisioning
With HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity, you donโt have to be limited by the old rules of IT procurement and provisioning. This service brings you the agility and economics of a public-cloud experience and the security and performance benefits of on-premises IT. The combination of HPE Scalable Object Storage and HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity will provide you the best of both worldsโon-premises infrastructure with cloud economicsโand a path to Hybrid IT.
If you want more details around these new features, please contact your local HPE/Scality sales team, who will be happy to whiteboard an architecture tailored to your specific requirementsโand to help you better understand how the HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING and HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity can be an integral part of your IT infrastructure.
Back to my original analogy. . . when buying a new car may be the right option for some people. But do the math yourself and quite often you will find that having a more flexible option than purchasing a new car makes good economic sense. On similar lines, combining HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity and HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING offers you flexibility and options to help you decide whatโs best for your business.
