Protect and copy your SAP HANA database landscape using HPE 3PAR storage replication

See how SAP HANA storage replication with HPE 3PAR Remote Copy can protect your database and its applications.

HPE 3PAR Remote Copy_blog.jpgWe can all agree that the growth of digitization across enterprises has increased the dependency on digital assets, such as SAP landscapes. These digital assets need to be available constantly and be resilient to disasters. One of the key data protection methods is SAP HANA storage replication.

In this blog, Iโ€™ll talk describe the HPE 3PAR Remote Copy software feature to implement storage replication for SAP HANA. HPE 3PAR Remote Copy can be configured in synchronous or in asynchronous periodic mode, based on recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO) expectations and requirements. Both local and remote site recovery options are possible with HPE 3PAR Remote Copy.Apart from disaster recovery, HPE 3PAR Remote Copy can be used to perform System Copy on HANA, which essentially creates copies of running HANA instances for nonproduction use-cases.

What best describes you with respect to SAP HANA?

Are you an administrator, an experienced implementer, a technical consultant, a customer advisor or just a newbie exploring the tip of this huge iceberg?

No matter which title suits you, we are pretty sure that protection of your database and its applications has definitely crossed your mind at least once (or a hundred+ times!). And given that there are umpteen ways to achieve data protection, what if we told you that the storage that hosts your HANA database can solve your problem?

Yes, your HPE 3PAR StoreServ system does exactly that. With Remote Copy functionality, HPE 3PAR offers a storage replication solution for your HANA database, thereby protecting it not only from local outages but also from site-level disasters.

A quick Remote Copy tutorial

Remote Copy software basically configures one or more replication links between two 3PAR arrays on a dedicated FC or IP network. To enable Remote Copy, all you need is a multisite license on the source and target 3PAR array. Once configured, you can replicate your data, log, and shared volumes without affecting SAP HANA database performance. In case of a site failure, creation of a new SAP HANA database instance on the secondary site is relatively simple. You just need to mount the replicated volumes to the destination host and run the SAP HANA database lifecycle manager (hdblcm) tool to register the HANA instance with the same security identifier (SID) and instance number. This tool registers the instance on the new host and bring up the HANA services.Remote recovery.jpg

Youโ€™ll be amazed to know that the same mechanism can be applied to create a copy of your existing SAP HANA instance. Just give a new SID and instance number while registering your system on the new hostโ€”and you have a copy of your production instance ready for dev or test or any other use. Hence apart from being one of the leading all-flash storage arrays in the market, HPE 3PAR enables you to protect your SAP landscape and refresh it as and when required.
