Sneak Peek into HPE StoreOnce Application Plug-ins

HPE StoreOnce Catalyst Plug-ins for designed for direct backup of business applications to HPE StoreOnce Systems, enabling optimized protection for Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and SAP HANA databases.

When we talk to application owners, we are told repeatedly that protecting their business-critical applications is a top priority. The best-configured, highly tuned application is of StoreOnce app plug ins_sneak peek_blog.jpgno use if it is not available.

Oracle, SAP HANA and Microsoft SQL Server administrators tell us they want backups that cause minimum disruption to operations while being available for reliable restore if needed. Many times what is wanted is the ease of a full back up every day—and the capability to keep weeks or months of backups to enable restore from multiple points in time as needed. Ideally without the need to rely on a storage or backup administrator.

Full backups are the easiest type of backup for restore operations. But when compared to an incremental-type backup, they can take a long time, especially with large databases. In order to meet the available backup window, a high-performance backup solution is required. And it needs to be delivered cost effectively.

Traditional data protection methods can no longer meet these requirements. A new approach is needed for the protection and recovery of information to ensure business continuity and application availability.StoreOnce application plug ins_availabilityJ.jpg
How do StoreOnce Catalyst Plug-ins help?

The need for speed, reliability and storage efficiency is the reason we created HPE StoreOnce Catalyst Plug-ins for direct backup of business applications to HPE StoreOnce Systems. These application plug-ins enable optimized protection for Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and SAP HANA databases. In designing these plug-ins, we put the database administrator (DBA) at the center and created a solution to enable the DBA to backup/restore the database directly to/from a HPE StoreOnce Catalyst store on a HPE StoreOnce System.

The result is flexible, high-performance protection that is managed by the DBA and can either be configured to independently meet the protection needs of the specific databases or in addition to an organization-wide data protection processes.

The Catalyst plug-ins provide high-speed backup and huge space savings on backup data storage. StoreOnce systems have high-efficiency data deduplication and compression algorithms that enable physical storage needs to be reduced by more than 90%. Space efficiency is further improved with logic in the StoreOnce plug-ins that intelligently processes the backup data before it is identified for duplicate chunks.

Catalyst is an HPE developed protocol, optimized for backup and restore operations. The Catalyst server runs on the HPE StoreOnce data protection system and the Catalyst client is built into the plug-in. Intelligently processing the backup data stream, then using Catalyst to transmit the backup to the StoreOnce System, allows backups to:

  • Run faster to reduce the backup time.
  • Consume less network bandwidth.
  • Take less storage space so more backup can be retained for longer to increase restore options.

How are StoreOnce Catalyst plug-ins deployed?

  • The plug-in is installed on the same host as the database.
  • The plug-in integrates with StoreOnce Catalyst does not support any other backup storage.
  • Prerequisites are a StoreOnce Catalyst license on the StoreOnce System and access (controlled by credentials) to a Catalyst target on a StoreOnce System.
  • Operation uses the application’s native tools so users do not need incremental expertise to use the product.

Yes - it’s true that the StoreOnce Catalyst Plug-ins are free!

  • Once you have purchased a Catalyst license for your StoreOnce Systems, these plug-ins are delivered as an extension to the StoreOnce systems.
  • They are available for download (unlike similar plug-ins from other backup appliance vendors) and at zero cost.
  • Any technical support for these plug-ins is delivered under the support entitlement of the StoreOnce Catalyst license.

Evaluating and deploying the StoreOnce Catalyst plug-ins for direct application backup

The pre-requisites are:

  • A StoreOnce appliance with a StoreOnce Catalyst license
  • Access to a Catalyst store on the StoreOnce appliance that is configured by the appliance administrator and can have password credentials and a quota if required
  • The target Catalyst store name and the appliance address (IPv4, IPv6 or FQDN) or the Catalyst over Fibre Channel address, if the database is SAN connected to the appliance.

For evaluation purposes you can start with our free 1TB StoreOnce VSA

The plug-in and user documentation is downloaded from HPE Software Depot. An HPE Passport account is needed. If you do not have one, it takes two minutes to set up and there's zero cost. Find the plug-ins here: Oracle RMAN, SAP HANA and Microsoft SQL Server.

The plug-in is installed on the same host as the database. Make sure the correct operating system version is downloaded. The installer will enable configuration of backup and backup copy destinations.

Once the plug-in is installed, backups and restores can be executed by the DBA autonomously to the StoreOnce appliance.

I love using the plugin! We have a found a bug with the latest version 1.3 for MSSQL server. It does not backup any DBs over 200GB and will not display any DBs that was used by older version used to backup those 200+GB DBs. How can we share this with the developers?

Comment from DBAs. "

Backups fail with errors like the one below for databases over 200 Gigabytes and/or databases that have more files than just the basic two files defined.

Write on "{9A0AE502-FA07-4208-9B8D-9A77AB6B4595}" failed: 995(The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.)

A nonrecoverable I/O error occurred on file "{9A0AE502-FA07-4208-9B8D-9A77AB6B4595}:" 995(The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.).

BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

The GUI does not list backups that are actually in the repository and created with the older version of the plugin, but where the databases fit into the category of those for the bug above.

The extended stored procedure ‘xp_StoreOnce’ exibits the same issue as the GUI when using the ‘SHOW IN STORE’ command.

No other commands available with this procedure were tested."

The reported failure looks identical to a defect investigated a while ago.  The defect occurs when the number of IO streams used is greater than 10 and is not actually related to the size of the database as described above.  This issue will be fixed in an upcoming release of the StoreOnce Catalyst Plug-in for MS SQL.  In the meantime, the following work around can be deployed.  Simply set the MAXSTREAMS count to 10 for multi-stream backups.  This can be accomplised via the plug-in GUI or CLI.  In the GUI, under policy management and the policy attributes, put 10 in the Maximum Streams field.  In the CLI, insert 10 in the number of maxstreams in the follwing command; HPStoreOnceForMSSQL.exe -backup "BACKUP DATABASE <DB-name> TO STORE=<store-name> [<SQL BACKUP OPTIONS>]" [-server <server-name>] [-instance <instance-name>] [-maxstreams <number>] [-tag "<tag-string>"] [-async-copy] [-password-file <password file>]
