Failed to Create vCenter Snapshot Associated With Volume Collection

I am getting this error in nimble:

Failed to create vCenter snapshot associated with volume collection xxxxx  schedule DailyRetain15 for virtual machine vsm-n1kv-2 because virtual machine tools in the guest are not running.

I cannot install vmware tools on this vm since its a vendor proprietry appliance.

anyt idea what to do?

You can place it in it's own datastore and not use vmware synchronization when taking snaps.

what is difference between using vmware sychorization vs no synch?

No synch does not call the VMTools agent to quiesce the filesystem and does not create a VMWare snapshot in order to get a application-consistent snapshot.

If none is used then you will have a crash-consistent
