BL480 showing as unknown after firmware update.

Hi

I tried upgrading the firmware on a bl480 blade and now the blade is showing as unknown in the chassis. Is there any options other than getting the system board replace to get this to work ?

Hi,

Does the blade boot at all?
Can you run the fw upgrade again? try an downgrade?
Clear CMOS on the blade might work, see below.
Another thing to try would be to take out the blade and put it back in.
You could also try to reseat the OA module and see if it gets recognized then

To clear the system configuration:

1. Power down the server blade.
2. Remove the server blade.
3. Remove the access panel.
4. Change position 6 of the system maintenance switch to on.
5. Install the access panel.
6. Install the server blade in the enclosure and power up the server blade.
7. Wait for the POST message that prompts you to change the switch setting:
Maintenance switch detected in the "On" position.
Power off the server and turn switch to the "Off" position.
8.Repeat steps 1 through 3.
9.Change position 6 of the system maintenance switch to off.
10.Repeat steps 5 through 7.

Re: BL480 showing as unknown after firmware update.

Hi

Thanks for your reply, I tried other slots and both slots it was unable to power up. I'm unable to try your other suggestions as the blade is in a remote datacenter and I don't have physical access. i've logged a case with HP support.
Thanks

Re: BL480 showing as unknown after firmware update.

I suspect you have the same issue that I came across - I used Firmware update CD on a spare 460 blade prior to building it and it killed it dead - would not boot in any slot or chassis ( we have a c7000 & a c3000).
It reported as onboard management processor failure, logged a ticket and was told not to use CD 8.4 on Blade servers, new motherboard fitted.
This weekend (13/06/09) updated all our blades using firmware cd 8.5 ( 8.4 has been pulled apparently) all blades OK except 1 460 which now gives the exact same error and a motherboard is on its way.

I think the lesson to learn is do the updates manually one at a time !!
Thanks

Re: BL480 showing as unknown after firmware update.

Hey
Thanks for your reply. I have been using the latest CD 8.50 and had some success how ver i have had some that have died. We have a range of these servers all around the world. It seems to be a bit of bad luck as to some fo them dieingi have not been able to do anythign to correct the situation. HP support usually try and tell me to boot of a cd and try the firmware UP again, and I have no access to do that or anything. How ever i have had the system board replaced and it seems to be ok i've updated the firmware. I've done a number of these aruodn the world latley to the latest firmware and it seems every so often i hit oen and it dies
