Distance between the rear of racks containing 1, 2 or 3 C7000 enclosures in hot aisle.

Arno has a customer quetion regarding facility planning:

Do we have documented / tested / best practice  what the minimum distance is between the rear of two racks in a hot aisle of the datacenter

Customer would like to have only 1 meter between the rear of both standard racks in their datacenter.

BladeSystem Site Planning Guide says:

• In the front of the rack, a clearance of 1219 mm (48 in) is required. This requirement applies to individual rack installations as well as when aligning rack rows so that the front doors are facing each other.
• In the rear of the rack, a clearance of 762 mm (30 in) is required to provide space for servicing the rack.

I think realistically, the smaller you make your hot aisle and the more CFM you pump into it, the more you have be careful about air flow.

So I would make sure they:

• Use filler panels on the front of the racks anywhere there is not IT equipment
• Check ends of rows carefully for hot air leaking into cold aisles.  Basic end of row door kits can be used to do a little Hot/Cold aisle containment if needed.
• Make sure you don’t have too many perf tiles such that you get proper pressure under the floor which also helps cold aisles stay cold.
