VC Flex-10 Ethernet Module to Cisco Catalyst 4510

We are setting up a BLc7000 with 2 VC Flex-10 modules. We have 10gb GBICs and are trying to connect to our Cisco Catalyst 4510R core switch. In the core switch is a 10gb module. We have not been able to get a link between these two devices.

The Cisco switch config for the 10GB is set for trunking.

Current status is "unavailable"

What's the best way to troubleshoot this ?

Did you already create a VC Domain? and a Network profile adding in the connected port?

Did you reboot the VC Module?

What firmware is running on the modules?

Yes - the domain was created

and a Network profile adding in the connected port? Yes - A network profile is created and the the port associated is Bay 1 Port X1(Not Linked)

Did you reboot the VC Module? No but I'll do that now

What firmware is running on the modules?

Re: VC Flex-10 Ethernet Module to Cisco Catalyst 4510

I ask about the reboot since sometimes, i've noticed, links don't come up properly due to misc. issues between firmware updates, long term operation, etc.

I recently had to reboot a whole enclosure after adding connections that the VC modules did not see as "active" due to some firmware issues between the OS and the modules. After updating the OA firmware, a reboot of the VC modules brought those links up and I was able to add them/see them in the network profile properly.

Re: VC Flex-10 Ethernet Module to Cisco Catalyst 4510

Steven, the reboot did not repair the issue. I will look for a firmware upgrade and then do another reboot.

What port is recommended to interface back to the core switch ? Is Bay 1 Port 1 ok ?

Also, since I have 2 of these Flex 10 modules (Bay 1 and Bay 2) do I need to link them together first ?

Re: VC Flex-10 Ethernet Module to Cisco Catalyst 4510

Check to OA firmware. There is an issue with pre 3.20 firmware and th VM modules.

"What port is recommended to interface back to the core switch ? Is Bay 1 Port 1 ok ?"

For 10Gbe, I though you needed to use a specific port. I don't have access to my Lab at the moment and can't look into it.

Are you plugging into the first copper port on the Flex10 Module?

"Also, since I have 2 of these Flex 10 modules (Bay 1 and Bay 2) do I need to link them together first ?"

You should not need to. The VC Modules have a cross connect via the backplane and should already be talking to eachother.

You can check this in the Virtual Connect Manager.

Re: VC Flex-10 Ethernet Module to Cisco Catalyst 4510

The only firmware upgrade available was 3.15 - I've upgraded to this firmware revision. Still cannot get a link to the switch.

any other ideas ?

Does the Cisco switch port need to be set for trunking ?

Re: VC Flex-10 Ethernet Module to Cisco Catalyst 4510

What type of 10Gb SFPs you have in VC modules (SR, LR, LRM)? And what type at the Cisco side?

Re: VC Flex-10 Ethernet Module to Cisco Catalyst 4510

Also make sure that they are HP branded SFPs on the VC side.
