Congratulations to our Black Employee Network Award winners!.

We recognized ten team members for their contributions to HPE and their communities during the annual Black History Month celebration on February 12. Read on to learn more about each of the winners:

Recognized for their significant contributions to inclusion and diversity and going ‘above and beyond’ to engage and inspire:

Champion Contributors

  • Anita Asuquo, HIT TCE Quality Management – Houston, Texas
  • Ashley Davis, Core Compute, Strategy and Business Planning – Houston, Texas

Anita is an early career employee who is actively engaged in the Black Employee Network (BEN), acts as a role model for others, and dedicates time to give back to the community through the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) who support the development of underrepresented minorities in STEM fields. She also coordinates events for the Women's Network at HPE and conducts coaching sessions on public speaking at work and in schools.

Ashley is known for her passion in promoting inclusion and diversity at our Houston site. As the BEN Networking Chair, Ashley has been instrumental in finding talent to fill BEN officer positions, has had a significant impact on increasing BEN membership, and continuously works to increase participation at BEN events. She also partners with other Employee Resource Groups to promote career growth and development programs.

Mia is an attorney who leads the HIT Regulatory Compliance & Governance Office, where she’s responsible for protecting the company against breaches in privacy. As the sponsor for the Alpharetta Black Employee Network and a member of the Hybrid IT Inclusion & Diversity Council, Mia has been instrumental in helping HPE create a more inclusive work environment.

Eric is passionate about HPE culture initiatives. He is a board member of the Young Employee Network (YEN), which led a fundraiser for the CURE Foundation. He also participated in Junior Achievers and the HPE Global Day of Service. Eric is skilled in cinematography and has produced many videos supporting awareness of site culture events, such as the Heart Walk Zumba, Moments That Matter, and PRIDE.

Recognized for their stellar performance and value they have added through their technical skills and business acumen:

Shining Stars

  • Havana Webb, Hybrid IT, TCE and Quality Knowledge Management – Houston, Texas
  • Joy Spellman, Manager, North America Onboarding and Inside Sales Enablement – Plano, Texas

Havana develops Synergy technical content to help customers set up, configure, and troubleshoot their Synergy systems. While working on scheduled assignments that require a deep technical understanding of Synergy hardware, Havana saw a need and took on the extra challenge to develop interactive content that vastly improves the customer experience. In fact, the interactive content is so useful that the VMware product and marketing teams reached out to Havana for a consultation to reuse her design.

Joy has helped to hire over 100 team members of the Inside Sales organization. She has mentored many sales representatives and played a key role in helping over 30 sales reps get promoted. In 2019, Joy onboarded over 375 sales reps to the HPE Sales organization. She also serves as co-chair of the North Texas BEN. In 2019, Joy volunteered 125 hours of community engagement through her sorority, mentoring programs, and the North Texas Food Bank.

Brilliant Stars

  • Mike Mero, HPE Pointnext Services, Solution Domain Delivery Manager-Customer Solutions Center – Alpharetta, Georgia
  • Derrill Bryant, HPE Pointnext Services, Customer Solutions Center – Alpharetta, Georgia

Mike was a key player in leading and operationalizing the support of one of the biggest outsourcing initiatives executed in the NA region. He took risks, stepped outside the box, and not only identified but assertively pushed for several new tool implementations to support the project. He simplified the model and created metrics and guidelines that allowed HPE to more effectively communicate internally and with our partners. Mike’s leadership, courage, innovation, and determination have helped his organization achieve great results.

Derrill has gone above and beyond to develop and deliver Simplivity training to new engineers on the team. He is a go-to technical expert and is often sought out to assist with tough Simplivity problems. Customers appreciate Derrill's calm nature, expertise, and willingness to work issues until they are resolved even if it takes him beyond his work hours. Derrill and a teammate developed a tool that has significantly improved the CSC's ability to troubleshoot Simplivity problems and has become exceptionally valuable to the Simplivity support teams and the engineering teams. 

Recognized as a force for good and their hands-on work giving back to their local communities:

Community Service

  • Thomas Metu, HPE Pointnext Services, Supply Chain – Houston, Texas
  • Ken Johnson, Inside Sales-Go To Market – Plano, Texas

Thomas is a community service champion. Over the past year, he volunteered at the Salvation Army and packaged hundreds of thousands of food items for Rise Against Hunger. Thomas also volunteered in his local community, raising thousands of dollars to help the less privileged in his hometown of Umuohiagu, Nigeria. As a result, he has been able to send medical personnel from the U.S. to Nigeria annually for the past five years and is planning to continue this drive with the long-term goal of building an outpatient clinic in Nigeria. Thomas also regularly serves as a high school mentor at Klein Oak High School in Spring, Texas.

Ken is the owner/founder of the Dallas Elite Track Club, a nonprofit year-round track program dedicated to serving youth from underprivileged socio-economic backgrounds. He has changed the lives of over 75 youths by ensuring they go to college on academic or athletic scholarships. Through his mentoring, Ken has exposed students to career paths they might not have considered otherwise. His organization has also provided groceries to needy children. When it comes to community service, Ken’s motto is that there is always someone with greater burdens than your own.
