Networking
I have a compaq presario 2510 desctop and a Presario 2100 laptop. How can I upgrade my compaq desktop 2510 to run XP and then, how can i get these two computers networked. Another problem I have is I am using a cable modem and a linsys wireless router, but my desktop only has a modem...So how do I upgrade that as well. My desktop is a dinasur but I want to be able to use it still.
Thank you very much.
Pete

Re: Networking
Forget trying to upgrade the presario 2510 to XP. It can't handle it -only has max 64M mem and there are no XP drivers for it.

They will talk to each other even if different operating systems. What you need to do is get a Network Interface Card that will work in your 2510. Kingston says you can use PCI cards which are pretty cheap these days. $10-$20. Even a 10 half duplex one will work. Of course that assumes your linksys is one with a builtin in switch and has extra Ethernet jacks. If not you may want to try a Wireless interface card but make sure it says it will work with win 98.
I suppose your laptop has a builtin in Ethernet jack so if you add a NIC to the 2510 you could run Internet connection sharing on the XP and connect them with a crossover cable.

Re: Networking
Hi Peter,
A simple network card (NIC) is the cheapest way to connect your desktop to the accesspoint if the distance is not a problem.
For you laptop you can use eiter an USB antenna (does your laptop have a USB connection?) or a PCMCIA card to connect to the Linksys accesspoint. Ask you dealer for a suitable product (for example a linksys WPC11 will do and costs about 20 USD).
If you have both presarios connected to the accesspoint you will have access to each device and Internet.
Regards,
Alexander
