Bonding 10Gb and 1Gb ports

Hello,

I'd like to know if is possible bonding 10Gb and 1Gb ports.

The plan is to configure one 10Gb port and one 1Gb port from H3C 5500 to one 10Gb port and 1Gb port on HP 7510.

No, it's not possible to aggregate (Port Trunking/Port Bonding/Port Teaming/Link Aggregation/etc.) physical interfaces with dissimilar media speeds (10Gbps with 1Gbps or vice-versa). You can instead aggregate 1Gbps with other 1Gbps interafaces (up to 8 in a single aggregation group, generally) or 10Gbps with other 10Gbps interfaces, you can't do a mix.

You could use 2 10Gb ports, but use media converters on one of the links to reduce it to 1Gb.

Hi,

Yes, I know it seems quite strange, but my IT manager told me to do so. I advice him I though it was not possible to bond different types of speeds, but he insisted.

Hi,

With media converters, do you mean SPF transceivers?

I see I can use 1Gb SPF on 10Gb ports, and that would be the way to go.

There is some confusion running on...

Using an SFP Transceiver on a SFP+ slot supporting SFP/SFP+ Transceivers is totally possible but this is unrelated with request done (as it was written): for Port Trunking you still must use all SFP or all SFP+ Transceivers...on both ends...not a mix.

No, I meant media converters, not transceivers. It was a joke. I was mocking your boss's completely terrible idea.

If you need both links up, make both links live independently of each other and then use spanning tree to block the 1Gb link.

Hello,

I know this is an old thread, but the need for bonding 10GbE with 1GbE ports occurs in newer 1950 series comware switches when there is legacy 1GbE SFP equipment which needs to be bonded with 1GbE copper ports (and media converters must be avoided - ugly solution and an extra point of failure) since the SFP media ports on the 1950s are 10GbE.

HOWEVER, in a mixed, one 1GbE and two 10GbE port BAGG (1GbE equipment connected on SFPs), when both 10GbE ports go down (both SFPs pulled) the 1GbE copper port is activated correctly, which makes the BAGG to work as a failover, but still not as aggregate/bond (all three ports to be up with an aggregate bandwidth of 3000000bps)

I have tried to statically set all ports to link speed 1Gb and full-duplex mode instead of auto, without luck.

Since static speed and duplex do not work but failover works what can be the reason that the BAGG is not aggregating the mixed media ports? Maybe it is doable after all, requiring a different configuration?

Hello, LAG (Non Protocol also known as Static aggregation OR LACP) requires
that LAG candidate member interfaces use same media types and, more
importantly, same exact interface speed and full duplex mode. So 10G+10G is
feasible (LAG forms and works correctly as expected, clearly if peer LAG
matches too), 1G+1G is OK too BUT no way it will work with a combination of
1G/10G interfaces.
