Re: migration from sun to eva
sure you can use those techniques for XP migrations too. Those techniques are independant from the used storage hard- or software.
Take a closer look into the VMware documentation regarding storage vmotion/ moving VMs to different datastores. If you're using VI3 you have to trigger a svmotion by using the remote CLI. Just connect the new volumes to the ESX servers, create new datastores and move the VMs online due svomtion to the new storages.
If your hosts can do software-mirroring you can use mirroring for migration data. Just connect new volumes to the host an mirror the data to the new volumes.

Patrick

Re: migration from sun to eva
For software mirroring we need to go to each hosts to have the mirroring.can you give me any pointer on that??

Re: migration from sun to eva
you're right. software-mirroring is a per-host task. You should check each host for mirroring-capabilities. Windows and Linux can do this per default. HP-UX needs AFAIK an extra license for LVM mirroring. In case vom VMware ESX you have to use storage vmotion.

Patrick

Re: migration from sun to eva
According to vsp doc:
svmotion must point to another host.when we are migrating to a server, where will it point at the time of migration??

That is plain VMOTION.
(S)torage VMOTION does not require a move of the VM to a different host as part of the move to a new datastore.
Can you tell us what manual says this?
Include the page number, please.

Re: migration from sun to eva
"IMPORTANT When you run svmotion, --server must point to a vCenter Server system."
This is the control connection. I don't see anything related to the "svmotion" command that talks about pointing to an ESX host.
