MSA 30 and ServiceGuard

Hello,

please advice on the following issue:
Two nodes (rx6660) form a serviceguard cluster.
Both nodes have two 6402 RAID (SmartArray) controllers. There is also an MSA30(MI) storage array which is connected to both nodes.
OS is HPUX 11.31
ServiceGuard 11.18
There is one SG package defined. This package is correctly changing between nodes if the node running the package is restarted or the lan cable is disconnected.
We try to simulate a controller failure, by disconnecting the SCSI cables from the SA controllers (on the rx6660 side).
The problem is that SG is not informed of this disconnection and the package still runs on the disconnected (from the array) node.
Furthermore, if the cables are connected back to the controllers, the disks are not claimed (by ioscan) unless a reset to controller is issued.

Thank you in advance.

Re: MSA 30 and ServiceGuard

Your configuration is not supported, because you must not share disks between smartarray controllers. Both controllers have SCSI ID 7, hence you have an address conflict.

You need to use "plain" SCSI controllers and set the ID of one of them from 7 to 6.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: MSA 30 and ServiceGuard

Thanks for the reply.

Not sure what you mean by "not supported"... Our local HP rep has proposed this solution in order to implement a two node cluster.

Could you elaborate or provide with URLs that show this as a non supported configuration?

Re: MSA 30 and ServiceGuard

Hello,

Serviceguard in general does not protect from shared storage failures. It is the responsibility of the design to make the storage redundant (disks are protected with RAID, accessed in a redundant way). As Torsten has written, you have to use plain SCSI and configure storage redundancy with LVM mirroring.

Re: MSA 30 and ServiceGuard

To make it clear, you can use the MSA30 MI, but do not share it between the smartarray controllers.

Hope this helps!

Re: MSA 30 and ServiceGuard

Hello,

you can use the A6829A for example. This controller is supported for MC/SG installations.

Re: MSA 30 and ServiceGuard

Before closing this thread (expecting some feedback from HP), the above configuration i.e. MSA30MI with ServiceGuard AND SmartARRAY RAID controllers 64xx, is NOT supported.
Please refer to this:
http://www.hp.com/products1/serverconnectivity/support_matrices.html
It is not included in the compatibility matrix.
Also on this:
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11967_na/11967_na.html
There is a note in Fault Tolerance stating:
With the dual bus, 4-port I/O module, redundant power supplies and fans, the MSA30 provides a high level of system availability. The MSA30 MI can be configured for RAID levels 0, 1, 0 + 1, 5 and RAID ADG when using a HP Smart Array RAID controller.
NOTE: HP Serviceguard/Multi-initiator configurations are NOT supported when using Smart Array RAID controllers.

Many thanks to everyone.
