Hi,all
I ran stm tool for got ST314804LW disk drive's serial number on my system.
At that time, the tool(stm) said to me serial number is " 3BT0MHGG00007201JNWN".
*OLD DISK DRIVE SERIAL :
USXXXXXX (total : 8 characters)
*NEW(on Installed)DISK SERIAL:
3BT0MHGG00007201JNWN( tatal : 220 charaters)
OLD and NEW drives are same type and size by made of SEAGATE.
Question) now, I am wondering under:
1) why New drive serial number is longer than Old?
2) May I believe New disk's serial number?
Have a good day~

Solution
Serial number does not necessarily have to be in a fix number of characters, I know this because I was once involve in supporting hard disk manufacturing and even for the same model and make the serial number can be totally different in terms of it's characters arrangement, etc. I've randomly check some of my L class machines which has an internal Seagate disk (I'm using ST39204LC) and all 4 of them have 20 characters in their serial number. This are disks originally purchased from HP and surely they are supported by STM. So the answer to your question is yes the serial number can be 20 characters long.
