MSA2000 G1 - Failed disk now marked as "available". Is it still safe to use?

Hi all,

after a disk failure (it is a 7.2 K RPM 1 TBytes SATA disk, model AJ740A), the Dedicated Spare for that Virtual Disk has been kicked in and the VD has been reconstructed successfully.

The failed disk had then been marked as "LEFTOVER", and it caused the Controller it belonged to to be set to a "HARDWARE WARNING" state.

I proceeded then with the "DELETE METADATA" function for that disk. Metadata had been successfully cleared and the "HARDWARE WARNING" is not there anymore.

Problem is: now the failed Disk is marked as "AVAILABLE". All green, all good.

What could this mean? Can I safely use it again (I.E. using it as "DEDICATED SPARE"?). I believe not, but I'm just wondering why it is shown as green and available. I was expecting it to be marked as permanently "FAILED".

The most significant errors I can find in the Logfile are the following:

Re: MSA2000 G1 - Failed disk now marked as "available". Is it still safe to use?

Most likely the disk was dead and came back for any reason. Hence the status was leftover (data not valid anymore). Now with cleared metadata it is just "new" and unused. You need to make it a spare again (like for any other replaced drive).

But since it has failed once, I assume it will fail again soon, better replace the drive.

>> Medium Error unrecovered read error

This is a good indicator for a drive that will die soon.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
