HP Smart Array P800 Controller PCI-E

Hi,

I have purchased second hand a HP StorageWorks MSA60 array and have all the cables etc required.

I am looking to purchase a controller card for the device so I can use the external mini sata connection and after doing my homework it looks like the HP Smart Array P800 controller card may work fine.

My question is this, is there any specifics I need to know about the reason why I ask is that I have seen the controller for sale on eBay but what seems to be the same card has different HP part numbers (398647-001, 501575-001).

Any advise on purchasing the right card for the storage device is most welcome

Kind regards

A

Hi,

what kind of server and what kind of PCI slot do you have available to install it in?

Hi, it's a PCIE x8 slot and it is a custom built server, quad core processor, using a raid 5 configuration on sata drives.

Hi,

partsurfer is usually helpful,

http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=398647-001

http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=501575-001

quickspecs too:

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12616_na/12616_na.html

The 501575-001 looks specialized somehow, you can see that the 398647-001 is in a lot more servers.

I'd say go with the 398647-001, that's what the option number in the quickspecs translates back to.

Will the p800 work in a non-HP server?

Will you need memory/battery too?

Re: HP Smart Array P800 Controller PCI-E

Thankf for the links Johan, by what it tells me on the quickspecs it looks like the P800 only works with integrity servers so it doesn't look like a viable option.

There's a special option number for the integrity servers.

Re: HP Smart Array P800 Controller PCI-E

I have a P812 array controller in a non HP GPU CT reconstruction computer. All of the internal ports work fine but nothing happens when I connect to the external ports. Is there some trick to make the external ports see the non HP drive boxes I have attached? Thanks

I am trying to connect a total of 24 drives, 8 internal (working fine), and 8 drives in 2 boxes to the external ports (no response when anything is connected to the external ports. Thanks
