I am currently looking to upgrade our servers from 11iv1 to 11iv2.
Will 11iv2 on RISC run the same things as 11iv2 on Itanium ?
For example, could I have 11iv2 on a RISC machine and use that for test/dev for applications or databases before simply moving them onto an Itanium server ?
Is it called 11.23 on both ?
Please help, starting to get confused.
Regards

Re: 11iv2 RISC vs 11v2 Itanium
RISC supports only 11i v1. HP-UX 11i v2 (11.23)runs only on Itanium (rx series)machines.
so you can't have 11i v2 (11.23) on RISC as well as on Itanium.

Re: 11iv2 RISC vs 11v2 Itanium
Though the initial release of HP-UX 11i v2 was
available on IA64 initially, it was later made available
on PA-RISC. The release that supports both IA64
and PA-RISC is called HP-UX 11i v2 Sept 04 release.
User space binaries compiled in PA-RISC would
even run fine on IA64.
See the release notes at:

SolutionHP-UX 11iv2 (11.23) --> IPF (Itanium) only
HP-UX 11iv2 September 04 (aka 11iv2 Update2 and 11.23PI) --> runs on both PARISC and IPF.
Take a look at this link for more information:

Re: 11iv2 RISC vs 11v2 Itanium
As per the HP sales person who is in touch with us, only HP-UX 11i v3 is compatible on both RISC as well Itanium and not the 11i v2
In fact I have tried HP-UX 11i v2 (june 2004)on RISC based systems. It didn't kickoff.
I don't have sept 2004 version OS to try

Re: 11iv2 RISC vs 11v2 Itanium
As far as I know, it is true that HP-UX 11i v3 will most probably be supported on both Itanium and PA-RISC. But that will take some time to be released. So, HP has released 11i v2 Sept 04, which also works on both Itanium and RISC.

Re: 11iv2 RISC vs 11v2 Itanium
I don't know what's the release date of 11i,v3;
but whenever it is, it will support both IA64 and
PA-RISC.
If your HP sales guy told you that 11i,v2 is only
IA64, then it must be long back. The original plan
was to release 11iv2 for IA64 only and it was done
around Oct 2003. That was called 11.23. The later
release, sometimes called 11.23PI, was released in
Sept 2004. Note that "uname" on both 11.23 and
11.23PI would print "11.23" only. One way to
differentiate would be the following:
# swlist | grep HPUXBaseAux
This should print B.11.23 as version number on a
11.23 machine and B.11.23.0409 on a 11.23PI
system. I suggest you get in touch with your
HP representative again, if you are interested.

Re: 11iv2 RISC vs 11v2 Itanium
You CAN compile and test code on a 11.23PI PA and run production on a IA system but I would not reccomend it. This is because generally you should keep your test system as close to your production as posible. And PA code will run ounder the ARIES emulator on the IA.

Re: 11iv2 RISC vs 11v2 Itanium
In my humble opinion they should have gone forward and called it 12 at the point of a unified version. Other planned features for v12 could have gone into v12.01 or some later version.
