4 TB LUN storage support on Itanium RX6600

One of our customers (hospital) would like to present 1 LUN of 4TB for MRI imaging purposes. As far as I know it will support up to 2TB by deafult. Is there some way to support this on an Itanium RX6600? HP-UX B.11.23

Thanks in advance for your answer(s).

Cheers,
Martin

You have perhaps looks at vxvm limits

Hi,
Well, i made a mistake in the same doc, you should apply PHCO_36744, PHKL_36745, PHCO_37939 to get a 16 TB LV.

OUr customer came up with this doc. Could this be an solution?

http://www.docs.hp.com/en/5992-2854/ch05s09.html

quote:
- VxFS supports file systems up to 4 terabytes in size.
- Version 5 enables the creation of file system sizes up to 4 terabytes. Files can be a maximum of 2 TB.[6] File systems larger than 2 TB must be created on a VERITAS Volume Manager volume.

Re: 4 TB LUN storage support on Itanium RX6600

Yes, vxvm is a solution but unfortunately it's not free.
LVM is indeed, free in HPUX and it seem ok for you to create a 4TB Lun with it.
If you are familiar with vxvm why not but if is not the case I suggest you to apply the patch and test it.
Commands Vxvm are not easy for a beginner, but surely you have a very easy gui to administrate it.

Re: 4 TB LUN storage support on Itanium RX6600

One extra point (that has caught me out before!)...

If you're looking at creating a filesystem greater than 2TB, you'll also need the OnlineJFS product.

It's one thing to have a LV/LUN greater than 2TB, but it's another to use that space as a single filesystem.

OnlineJFS is not included in the Foundation OE...

Install these patches if not there already PHCO_36744, PHKL_36745, PHCO_37939

Keep PE size as 256 MB. you should be able to add 4 TB lun in to the VG.

However just keep in mind very big size luns can cause I/O performance issues.

Re: 4 TB LUN storage support on Itanium RX6600

Hi,

I installed the patches PHCO_36744, PHKL_36745, PHCO_37939 as recommended and also used a PE size of 128. When I run a newfs I get the following message:

MCLLEE2: /dev # newfs -F vxfs -o largefiles /dev/vgims4s3/rlvolds5
mkfs: You don't have a license to run this program

Any idea?

Thanks!
