Anyone using/heard of

Anyone using or heard of anyone using Macintosh machines as end user terminals for Oracle Apps?
I know the chance is remote, just asking.

Are you trying for the record for the least
useful Subject of all time? (The competition
here is pretty strong.)

Not a particularly detailed description
there, either.

I frequently use xterm on a Mac OS 10.4.x or
10.5.x system to access my VMS system when
I'm away from it. Knowing nothing about the
requirements for "Oracle Apps", I can't say
whether xterm would satisfy them.

What do you use for an end-user terminal now?

Not a partcularly useful response.

Wow, someone else can go out of context. I mean no offense(which I don't think you can say), but c'mon.

Given practically no useful information, it's
about the best I can do.

You're welcome to try to reduce my
(considerable) ignorance.

Still wondering...

Re: Anyone using/heard of

I thought all recent versions of Oracle Apps were web based. If that's the case, as long as they work in the browser you should be fine.

The real way to find out would be to check the Oracle Apps docs and see what the supported browsers, or other interfaces, are.

Re: Anyone using/heard of

Oracle Apps version R11 and R12 are all web based. Oracle does have jinitator for R11 on the Mac o/s, not sure for R12.

Jinitator is being phased out and Oracle is recommending that everyone use Sun Java Plug-in, but I do not see any thing for Apple O/S.

I would bounce the question off Oracle.

Re: Anyone using/heard of

Shalom,

Macintosh has a browser. A number of choices.

Oracle has been moving to a .net and purely browser based interface.

In addition, Mac OS is based on Linux, runs an X server and can run Oracle applications in motif mode.

So the answer is yes, this is a perfectly acceptable platform to run Oracle Applications client on.

No, it's not.

It can. X is optional.

What is "motif mode"? If there are Motif
versions of "Oracle Apps", then I wouldn't be
amazed if they worked. I've done a DECterm.

They might want to know which version of
anything we might be talking about. Asking
here, providing no useful information, must
be more fun. (Some of the answers sure are.)

Re: Anyone using/heard of

Points all around, thanks for your replies. Plenty extra points given for being polite and willing to be helpful.

I did more digging outside of the forums and MacOSX is fine for running jinitiator, as well as new jre's, providing you've sanity checked the jre version against the spec sheets (as mentioned by a few folks here). Even though Java is supposed to compatible with its own code, it's seems pretty clear that it's not, and Oracle, though it owns both, has numerous incompatibilties between Java and certain versions of its Applications Systems. Similar caveats apply to which browser to use, as well as the Oracle Terminal definitions for remotes of course, so it seems that even though it's Mac, its just fine as much as anything else is fine for the end user of Oracle Applications.
