Disaster Recovery

We currently have 2 RP2470 HPUX 11i systems. 1 is a single processor 512 MB ram system. THe other is a 2 processor 1GB ram system. We are looking to purchase a standby system. We also wanted to keep a mirrored hard drive on the shelf. If the server has a hardware error we want to pull that hard drive off the shelf and put it in the standby system to get back up and running. We tried putting a mirrored disk from the single processor unit and putting it in to a 2 processor server. Of course when it access the kernal it crashes with a missing processor error. When we ack the error in the GSP it tried to boot again with the same result.

Is there a way to disable a processor or some other way to make this mirrored disk work in a 2 processor server?

The hard drive on the shelf strategy requires you to periodically update that disk on a shelf or you will find your users have different passwords and the system will not function properly after "recovery"

HP-UX has a free tool called Ignite. A make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery image on a rp2470 system will recover well and automatically make adjustments for number of processors and other hardware nuances at recovery time.

Using Ignite is the HP supported method of handling the DR scenario you have just described.

Yes I am aware of the potential problems with the hard drive on the shelf. Thank you for pointing it out though. The single processor system does not change. The only files that change are session files.

Can you tell me more about where to look at documentation for ignite? I want to determine how it works and what it takes to work with my senerio.

There is some functionality of disabling and enabling processors on partitionable systems. I don't know if this will apply to your 2470 or not but here's some documentation on the capacity on demand.

My boss had put me on a different project. Ignite is not the way he wanted to go. Since nothing changes on this server, and a disk on the shelf would get us up and running in a matter a minutes he wants to continue with that path. I have opened another thread pertaining to this idea called mirror disk. Closing this thread.
