DST question

I love this forum! I may not be able to answer many questions, but I learn a lot.

Reading John Collier's thread brings up a question. Indiana has decided to adopt daylight savings time starting next year, so what do I have to change to activate this?

I'm running Fedora Core 3, with a couple machines on Redhat 8. I suppose the simplest thing would be to change to another location in /etc/sysconfig/clock, or swap a new file into /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Indiana/Indianapolis.

The problem here is, I don't know for sure what an appropriate location would be. Columbus, Ohio, I suppose, would work.

Any better suggestions?

Hi

The key here is to Select the correct time zone and check the "Hardware clock set to GMT" checkbox.
Once you do this the system would automatciallt take care of daylight savings if it applies to your zone .

You should edit and compile a new time zone with the right values for your DST time. Use the zic command. See this howto for detailed information:

The problem with zoneinfo is that there is no zone for Indianapolis/Indiana using EDT. DST goes into effect for the first time in a few months. A few counties in Indiana do use EDT, but I don't see them listed in zoneinfo, nor do I see anything listed for Ohio.I didn't do too well with Redhat. Apparently I'm already registered there, but not with the password I thought. :-(It looks like Ivan's link is going to work for me. I'm just glad I don't live in Brazil! ;-)
